Job Summary |
Conducts proactive patrols and emergency and incident response. Responds to routine calls for service to assist the campus community. Enforces laws and University policies. Under administrative supervision, acts to maintain the safety of Elmhurst University students and employees and protect University property from damage. |
Salary Range |
$20.00. This is the expected hourly rate for this position. |
Essential Functions |
- Performs proactive campus patrols to deter crime, responds to calls for service and to incidents, and documents incidents.
- Prepares reports on incidents which occur, and work orders on maintenance needed.
- Initiates emergency response procedures, and fulfills responsibilities in handling emergencies in accordance with department's emergency procedures.
- Participates in accident/incident investigations.
- Makes recommendations to Public Safety administration on matters of policy and procedures regarding student and personnel protection, property protection, fire safety, emergency preparedness, access control, and parking and traffic control.
- Maintains proficiency in dispatch duties, and performs the duties of dispatch staff as needed to cover breaks or open shifts.
- Performs traffic control and parking enforcement duties, including writing tickets for parking violations, and reserving parking lots or spaces for guests and special events.
- Performs crowd management and emergency response during special events.
- Represents Elmhurst University in court appearances and during investigations by law enforcement agencies.
- Maintains positive working relationships with campus personnel and local emergency responders.
- Interacts in a calm, professional and cordial manner with members of the campus community, including students, staff and faculty, as well as visitors to campus.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Must be able to pass and maintain department sponsored CPR and first aid certification.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain any special training certifications required to carry and use typical security/law enforcement duty equipment, including any authorized defensive equipment (baton, pepper spray) or restraint devices.
- Demonstrate sound, mature judgment.
- Ability to respond calmly and appropriately to emergencies.
- Positive attitude.
- Ability to work well with all members of a diverse campus population.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Solid command of the English language, both verbally and in writing.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license in the state of permanent residence, and meet the qualifications for driving campus vehicles.
- Demonstrated experience with typical office computer applications.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Investigative experience.
- Three years recent experience as a sworn law enforcement officer or campus public safety officer is strongly preferred.
- A PERC card issued by the State of Illinois as a licensed security guard.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements |
The essential functions of this position are primarily performed in a variety of environments including patrol vehicles, offices, residence halls, parking zones, and other campus locations, with regular exposure to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, including extreme hot and cold. Work is often physically demanding in nature and may require unassisted walking or running, standing or sitting, navigating uneven or slippery surfaces, speaking, hearing, and using fine motor skills during routine patrols and incident responses. Work requires the use of weighted safety officer equipment and involves regular lifting of objects up to 50 pounds, and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds. Work Hours |
This is a full-time position. Shift covers 12:00 am - 8:00 am. 5 days a week with regular set days off determined based on operational needs.
Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as required. Schedules are based on department needs, and are at the discretion of the Assistant Director or Executive Director of Public Safety.
