About the Position

The 4-H Program Coordinator is a community-based leadership role in Hennepin County responsible for managing and leading the 4-H Environmental Clubs (E-Clubs), which include two NOAA Youth Climate Lab clubs and three urban agriculture clubs. The program's core mission is to empower youth as environmental leaders by focusing on three key goals: Elevating Youth Voice through a public media partnership to share climate stories; Increasing Climate Literacy by using NOAA resources to boost knowledge about human impact on ecosystems; and Driving Community Action by equipping youth to investigate local problems, plan data-driven solutions, and present them directly to civic leaders.

Working in close partnership with an Extension Educator, the Coordinator will lead E-Club program delivery for weekly in-school and afterschool activities during the 2025-26 academic year. This involves collaborating with a small team of facilitators to implement the curriculum across five specific middle and early college academies (Sanford, Franklin, Hall STEM, Ella Baker, and Brooklyn Center). The role requires extensive collaboration with stakeholders (youth, families, partners, and University staff) to meet the objectives of three grants and broader Minnesota 4-H goals.

Required Schedule and Hours

The position is 20 hours a week to be worked Monday-Wednesday, and must include these days/times: a 1 hour weekly planning meeting and 2 hours of work time on Mondays, Tuesdays: 8am-3 pm; Wednesdays 8am-6pm (with 1-2 breaks in the day), additional specific days and times on Monday-Wedneday may be required; other work hours will be determined prior to start date.

Job duties

Program Management and Delivery 45%

  • Plan and manage the delivery of after-school programs and other events and activities.
  • Recruit youth to actively participate in trainings & planning sessions
  • Under the direction of the Extension educator, support and mentor a team of E-Club facilitators to successfully implement weekly e-club programming, including establishing and maintaining a positive learning environment, implementing lesson plans & developing supply lists to successfully implement activities as a team.
  • Identify and implement strategies to diversify program participation, ensuring programs and processes are welcoming, accessible, and inclusive of youth, volunteers, and staff with varying backgrounds and experience.
  • Other related duties as assigned

Program Planning and Curriculum 25%

  • Create and implement high-quality, culturally relevant, impactful programs that support youth in learning and leading focused on climate, urban agriculture, and environmental stewardship.
  • Under the guidance of the Extension educator, incorporate NOAA curriculum resources into the 4-H Climate, Food, and You curriculum with the goal of dissemination to other E-Clubs.
  • Collaborate with 4-H Extension educator(s) to engage youth, program partners, and volunteers to plan and implement environmental based learning and leadership opportunities that achieves goals outlined in environmental based grants and aligns with the strategic direction of the MN 4-H Youth Development program and leads to program growth and sustainability.

Partnerships and Collaboration 20%

  • Under the leadership of the Extension educator, initiate and develop collaborations with climate action experts, environmental educators, and community resources in climate action projects and curriculum resources
  • Maintain positive partnerships with Minneapolis Public Schools, Minneapolis Community Education, and other school-based program partners.
  • Build relationships with community partnerships that extend program reach and expand program impact.
  • Represent 4-H & contributing partners appropriately at all times

Program Operations and Evaluation 10%

  • Manage established processes for youth enrollment, event participation and reporting.
  • Evaluate the programs to gauge progress and fulfill reporting requirements
  • Maintain & share evaluation data & attendance records with 4-H & partner staff
  • Apply risk management procedures to youth programs.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience in a direct youth development role (as a member, volunteer, leader, paid staff member, or some combination) OR education and related experience to equal six (6) years; at least one of the 6 years of experience must be in the field of environmental science or urban agriculture.
  • Experience effectively interacting with people from various cultural backgrounds, including race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity.
  • Experience co-creating & co-facilitating lessons/activities for youth
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, timelines, and schedules while maintaining high quality of work and working with minimal supervision.
  • Good problem-solving skills and a solid understanding of risk management
  • Basic knowledge of experience in word processing, email, and utilizing and navigating internet browsers.
  • Proficient in oral and written English communication skills.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with youth, parents, adult volunteers, and staff
  • A willingness to become familiar with and work within the philosophy and guidelines of University of Minnesota Extension, the Minnesota 4-H program, and the local 4-H program
  • Must be at least 21 years old by the start date; required due to the UMN Safety of Minors policy which states program staff must be at least two years older than the oldest participant.
Highly Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience creating high-quality, culturally relevant, educational programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Basic understanding of youth development principles and best practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize work and produce expected work products.
  • Ability to adapt to changes (e.g. programming, work priorities).
  • Evidence of ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Proven record of successfully managing multiple programs simultaneously.
  • Experience or education related to climate studies and ecosystems.
  • Education in youth development, sociology, education, volunteer systems management, communication, or related field.
Additional Requirements/Working Conditions:
  • Must complete all required training, including but not limited to Safety of Minors and Civil Rights training.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work at varying work locations, often or occasionally in the same work day
  • Valid driver's license and own means of transportation with required liability insurance. Mileage reimbursement provided in accordance with University policy.
  • Must have the ability to lift, carry, pull, and push 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand or sit for 90 minutes at a time, sometimes multiple times a day. Some days will require multiple or almost all work hours of standing or sitting.
  • Must be able to speak in clear English for up to 90 minutes at a time, sometimes multiple times in one day.
  • Ability to work on a computer for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must complete University of Minnesota payroll paperwork, including completing an in-person I-9 (identification verification process) and have a successful completion of a background check with motor vehicle record review prior to the first day of work.
  • This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship.
