Job Summary

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) serves as the senior administrative leader for the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences (PRDS). Reporting jointly to the Department Chair and the School of Dentistry's Assistant Dean of Finance, the CAO provides strategic leadership and direction for all administrative, financial, and operational functions of the department.

The CAO advises the Chair, faculty, and senior leadership on policy, planning, and resource allocation to ensure that departmental goals align with those of the School and the University. The position requires broad expertise in higher education administration, financial management, and personnel leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all administrative operations, ensuring compliance with University, School, and external policies and regulations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain effective management systems and internal controls that promote efficiency, transparency, and accountability.
  • Manage departmental finances, including budgeting, forecasting, analysis of operating, endowment, and grant funds, and oversight of post-award administration.
  • Direct administrative services encompassing contracts and grants.
  • Provide fiscal and operational oversight for educational programs, residencies, and departmental conferences.
  • Oversee departmental facilities, space planning, capital projects, and environmental health and safety compliance.
  • Serve as liaison to other University departments, central offices, and external partners to facilitate communication and problem-solving.

Department Description

The department of Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences (PRDS) is the largest clinical, teaching and research department within the School Dentistry. PRDS conducts multidisciplinary instruction, research, and patient care programs through its five divisions: Preclinical Education, Biomaterials & Engineering; General Clinical Dentistry; Endodontics; Oral Epidemiology and Dental Public Health; and Prosthodontics. PRDS has over 300 faculty (comprised of full-time, part-time and volunteer faculty) and 38 staff members.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field and at least seven years of progressively responsible experience in academic, financial, and human resources management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of five years' experience hiring, supervising, and managing high-performing employees.
  • Broad knowledge of University or comparable institutional processes, policies, and systems, with emphasis on budgeting, fund management, and personnel administration.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of financial analysis, reporting, accounting, payroll, and risk management principles.
  • Strong leadership, management, and conflict resolution skills, with proven ability to motivate and direct diverse teams.
  • Exceptional organizational and customer service skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence, persuade, and build productive relationships across all organizational levels.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, sound judgment, and strategic problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency with organization-specific and common computer applications; ability to work collaboratively across departments and locations.
  • Demonstrated tact, diplomacy, and professionalism in interactions with diverse constituencies.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge of UC policies, procedures and education systems.
  • Graduate degree in business or public administration, finance, organizational development, educational administration, or related field
