ILC Dover has been a pioneer in state-of-the-art space development and production programs since the 1960s. Our company culture and competencies focus on high quality, reliable softgoods for demanding applications. From Apollo on, our innovations have supported every U.S. astronaut space flight mission. We are expanding our team in Houston to support the next generation of exploration systems, including cutting-edge Portable Life Support Systems (PLSS) for extravehicular activity (EVA).

Job Overview:

We are seeking a Design Engineer with experience in Portable Life Support Systems (PLSS) or related life support systems to join our multidisciplinary, Houston-based team, to advance the next generation of human spaceflight technologies.

The Design Engineer develops assembly or component designs for use in ILC products; designs are developed with consideration of quality, cost, function, system integration and producibility. Develops concepts, prototype components or assemblies, test the products, document the designs, and support production during manufacture. This position is subject to moderate supervision with latitude for independent judgment.

Develop CAD models, detailed drawings, and engineering documentation in accordance with aerospace standards.
Create prototypes and conduct testing to ensure design performs as expected.
Work with fabrication and manufacturing departments to ensure final design is properly executed in the creation of mechanical products.
Create and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics.
Conduct trade studies, tolerance analyses, and design reviews to optimize performance, mass, and manufacturability.
Interface with NASA and commercial customers to define requirements and present technical solutions.
Use of films, fabrics, adhesive systems, heat sealing, bonding, and sewing technologies during the design process.
Use of the following methods, related to softgoods, during design of products or development of processes: inflation and leakage testing, burst and proof pressure optimization, and materials physical properties testing.
Use of pattern development methods, including marking, grading, CAD development processes, preparation for automated or manual cutting, and general pattern methods for ease of manufacture during the design of products.
Support prototype fabrication, testing, and validation of PLSS hardware in lab and field environments.
Contribute to risk assessments, FMEAs, and verification plans for life support systems.
