Responsibilities
The Machine Tool Operator (MTO) (Service Contract Act (SCA) Occupation Code 19010) support NASA - Marshall Space Flight Center's Structural Strength Test Branch and contractor personnel in support of NASA research and development, configuration and maintenance of test article systems and testing infrastructure. This position sets up and operates machine tools, and uses hand tools to make or repair (shape, fit, finish, assemble) metal parts, tools, gauges, models, patterns, mechanisms, and machines. This position receives direction from the Department Manager and Team Leads. This position specializes in operating one or more than one type of machine tool (e.g., jig, borer, grinding machine, engine lathe, milling machine) to machine metal for use in making or maintaining jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, or metal dies or molds used in shaping or forming metal or nonmetallic material (e.g., plastic, plaster, rubber, glass). Machine Tool Operator duties include, but are not limited to: * Planning and performing difficult machining operations which require complicated setups or a high degree of accuracy, setting up machine tool or tools (e.g., installing cutting tools and adjusting guides, stops, working tables, and other controls to handle the size of stock to be machined. * Determines proper feeds, speeds, tooling, and operation sequence or selects those prescribed in drawings, blueprints, or layouts). * Utilizes a variety of precision measuring instruments, making necessary adjustments during machining operation to achieve requisite dimensions to very close tolerances. * Selects proper coolants and cutting and lubricating oils to recognize when tools need dressing, and to dress tools. Qualifications
Required Experience: (i.e.: Knowledge, skills, abilities, software, etc.) * Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, program readouts, and technical directives to select tooling, materials, feeds, and speeds. * Experience using various machine tool attachments (e.g., rotary tables, magnetic chucks, taper attachments) and performing precision work on parts with complex configurations and close tolerances. * Ability to measure and maintain critical dimensions using precision instruments (micrometers, gauge blocks). * Experience working with various metals, alloys, and materials to determine proper machining methods. Education: * High School Graduate or GED * Knowledge of machine shop and tool room practice obtained through on the job training. Preferred Experience: (i.e.: Knowledge, skills, abilities, software, etc.) * Experience selecting proper materials, cutting tools, feeds, and speeds to optimize machining processes for different metals, alloys, and materials. * Experience in reading and interpreting complex blueprints, program readouts, and technical directives, including the ability to visualize finished parts with critical dimensions. * Experience in an industrial, aerospace, or manufacturing environment where quality control, safety protocols, and precision are stringently maintained. Essential Job Functions: * Ability to independently perform more complex machine setups, resolve machining problems, and work with various attachments and materials. * Must be able to work from written and verbal instructions * Good communication (written and verbal) skills. * Must adhere to MSFC and OSHA safety requirements, including use of appropriate PPE when necessary and follow written technical procedures. * Must be dependable and willing to work hours outside the normal schedule. Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and workmanship. * Experience reading and understanding specifications and detailed work instructions. Work Environment: * High Bay, Lab, Test Stands, Machine Shop Physical Requirements: * Must be able to pass a MSFC physical examination for any required safety-related certifications. * All positions supporting the METTS III contract require successful completion of NASA medical screenings at the beginning of employment and annually thereafter. The need for these screenings is determined based on the outcomes of the Safety, Health, and Environmental Job Assessment Questionnaire. * Must be able to lift 40lbs with or without reasonable accommodation. * Must be able to work at heights. Other Essential Functions: * Must be able to pass a security background check per Redstone Arsenal/MSFC requirements Security Clearance Requirement: * Requires ability to obtain and maintain NASA Public Trust background screening requirements.
