UW-Parkside is seeking a Heat/Cool Plant Operator I or Heat/Cool Plant Operator II for the Heating and Chilling Plant on campus. The Heating & Chilling Plant provides steam and chilled water to campus buildings, which are inter-connected by a series of underground tunnels and conduits. Power Plant Operators are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the entire plant in a safe and efficient manner, assistance in emergency situations, emergency repairs, and performance of any other duties associated with the operation of a complex heating and chilling plant.

Hours of Work:

Primarily 2nd shift (3:00 PM - 11:00 PM)

  • Occasional 1st shift (7:00 AM - 3:00 PM) or 3rdshift (11:00 PM - 7:00 AM) Random shifts, 12 hour shifts, repeated/successive shifts, or overtime may be required.
Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Cleans and maintains work areas and equipment
  • Starts, stops, and adjusts equipment settings to maintain operational requirements
  • Maintains forms, logs, or reports
  • Adheres to safety protocols and procedures
  • Ensures safe and efficient operation of the plant and its associated equipment
  • Assists in the training and oversight of new employees in these and other safe and efficient plant operational procedures
  • Analyzes data and communicates recommendations on equipment and systems operations, both verbally and in written reports
  • Complies with environmental protection protocols and procedures
  • Assists with preventative and corrective maintenance as needed
  • Makes regular inspections of plant equipment and prepares equipment malfunction reports
  • May work without direct supervision on shift operations

Starting pay at $26.00/hr

Required Qualifications:

Operator I

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Some training in heating, cooling and/or power plant operations, or related experience

  • ASOPE Third Class Power Plant Operating Engineer License (or approved equivalent), to be obtained prior to the completion of the 12-month probationary period and maintained thereafter

Operator II

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Formal training or a minimum of one year of experience in heating, cooling, or power plant operations.

  • Must possess and maintain a current ASOPE Third Class Power Plant Operating Engineer License or equivalent credential

Ergonomic Requirements:
  • Must have the physical strength and stamina to perform required work

  • Ability to perform duties under adverse conditions such as working below grade, in extreme hot/cold or confined spaces and from elevated or uneven surfaces

  • Ability to climb ladders, traverse planks or walkways, squat, kneel, bend, stoop, crawl, twist, lay flat and adequate balance to accomplish the required tasks

  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs. repeatedly

  • Ability to tolerate airborne dust and a dirty work environment

  • Ability and flexibility to access boiler watersides/firesides and tanks/vessels through restricted openings as small as 11" x 15" elliptically

  • Ability to apply torque by use of hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, torso, and legs

  • Ability to exert pushing, pulling, and twisting forces

  • Ability and mobility to move about the plant and perform complex procedures under established time constraints

Education:

High school diploma or GED
