JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY:

A Master Shipfitter has approximately five (5) or more years of experience fitting and assembling structural metal components with precision and adherence to safety and quality standards. This role may serve as a lead mechanic on projects involving up to ten (10) trade personnel. The position requires flexibility to work extended hours, including nights and weekends, as needed.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:



  1. Positions, aligns, fits, and welds parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools
  2. Verifies conformance of workpieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes
  3. Tack-welds fitted parts together
  4. Lays out and examines metal stock or workpieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met
  5. Aligns and fits parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers
  6. Locates and marks workpiece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications
  7. Positions or tightens braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, or bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting
  8. Studies engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences
  9. Moves parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes
  10. Sets up and operates fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, and drill presses, to bend, cut, form, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal components
  11. Performs other duties as assigned



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES





    1. Measures, templates, cuts, grinds components for foundations and other structural members
    2. Expert use of material to prevent waste
    3. Expert use of cutting equipment (Plasma Cutter and Oxy/Fuel Torch)
    4. Expert reading, interpreting of blueprints (successful identification of material types, parts, references, applicable views/details)
    5. Expert use of temporary attachments
    6. Expert understanding of weld joint design (full and partial penetration welds, chamfers, and bevels)
    7. Expert skill in installation and removal of fasteners and rivets
    8. Correctly identifies base material types and thicknesses
    9. Expert level tack welder in common shipboard positions (overhead, vertical, horizontal)
    10. Expert tack welding in uncommon/ limited access positions (mirror, confined, heavy interferences)
    11. Qualified in multiple processes and metal types (FCAW, SMAW, CRES, ALUM)
    12. Must demonstrate the ability to mentor, coach, and support subordinate mechanics in skill development and task execution.
    13. Expert knowledge of erect and set principles
    14. Expert understanding of material fabrication
    15. Recognizes tooling needs (Which tool to use for which application)
    16. Self-Motivated, able to solve job issues without need for Supervisory approval
    17. Trains, motivates, and drives production of less skilled employees
    18. Ability to read fit up/alignments measuring devices (rulers/tape, levels, bobs, squares, etc.)
    19. Expert use of power tools (grinders, reciprocating saws, drills etc.)
    20. Expert use of hand tools (hammers, punches, clamps, etc.)
    21. Correct set up of tools prior to use (running lines, drop tests, etc.)
    22. Expert knowledge of power tool safety, (correctly identifying kick direction & pinch points)
    23. Expert use of positioning equipment (dogs/wedges, rams, saddles)
    24. Expert knowledge of shipbuilding standards (009-12, W1689, Preheat/Interpass)
    25. Expert knowledge of inspection standards (009-25, 009-06)
    26. Adheres to fire safety principles (hot work tickets, positioning firewatches, 35' rule, etc.)
    27. Ability to instruct others to navigate onboard vessels to find work areas/backsides of work areas
    28. Expert knowledge of industry safety standards/training
    29. Adheres to industry safety standards
    30. Requires no supervision/oversight to accomplish work



JOB REQUIREMENTS

QUALIFICATIONS:



  1. High school diploma or GED and 5 or more years of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
  2. Ability to gain access to military installations
  3. Must be able to pass drug test and background check



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:





    1. Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and seek help with weights over 50 pounds
    2. Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time





While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs/vertical ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

This is a physically demanding position and may accommodate some physical disabilities. Physical dexterity may be required when performing walk thru and inspection of job sites. In the performance of the walk thru you will be required to transverse steep stairwells, vertical ladders and bending or stooping thru tight spaces. There may be occasional lifting of materials weighing not more than 50 pounds.



ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

This position works on the jobsite. There is exposure to hostile environments, loud noises, hazardous chemicals/fumes and airborne particles, smoke, extreme temperatures moving mechanical parts: high, precarious places.

During work-site visits will be required to wear appropriate PPE including, but not limited to:

Hard hat

Ear plugs or attenuator

Safety shoes

Dust mask or respirator

Gloves
