Job Description

Position Summary

We are seeking a mid-level Compliance Engineer to support the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Security Operations program. This role requires someone who can apply comprehensive knowledge across key tasks and contribute to high-impact assignments. The ideal candidate will function as a technical expert across workstreams and may provide guidance to others. This is a remote full-time position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement and enhance security capabilities for compliance, detection, and incident response.
  • Perform compliance activities including scanning, documentation, remediation tracking, and required assessments.
  • Support ATO and Continuous Monitoring processes, including SSP/SAR development, vulnerability scanning, POA&M updates, and change reviews.
  • Conduct control assessments and apply federal cybersecurity standards (e.g., NIST 800-53, ARS) across cloud and hybrid environments.
  • Collaborate with technical teams and security stakeholders to resolve issues, guide remediation, and maintain audit readiness.
  • Contribute to automation efforts and AI-driven improvements that enhance operational efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate security documentation and incorporate updates from emerging policies, technologies, and best practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years' experience and Bachelors degree; 4 additional years of experience is required if no Bachelors degree.
  • Experience in one or more security domains: compliance, detection, incident response, or operations management.
  • Experience with cloud security in AWS/Azure/Google, including federal governance and compliance frameworks (FedRAMP, FISMA, NIST, CMS ARS).
  • Background in government IT environments (CMS or HHS preferred).
  • Experience with automation, scripting, and emerging AI applications for security operations.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Relevant certifications:
  • CompTIA Security+ (Security+)
  • GIAC Security Essentials Certification (GSEC)
  • Certified Authorization Professional (CAP)
  • Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)
  • Must be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance
