Job Overview
Under general supervision, the Water-Based Fire Suppression Systems Inspection & Testing Technician conducts inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) of water-based fire protection systems. This role ensures strict compliance with UFC 3-601-02, NFPA 25, DoDI 6055.06, AFI 32-2001, AFI 91-203, and other applicable DoD, Air Force, and local installation standards. This role is full time onsite at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery AL.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties & Job Functions:
- Perform ITM of water-based fire protection systems in accordance with NFPA 25 and UFC 3-601-02 schedules, including:
- Automatic sprinkler systems
- Standpipe and hose stations
- Fire pumps (electric, diesel, jockey) - conduct flow tests, churn tests, and relief valve tests
- Water storage tanks and gravity tanks
- Control, check, pressure-relief, and supervisory valves
- Fire department connections (FDC) and fire hydrants
- Backflow prevention assemblies
- Document inspection and test results, tag equipment, and enter data into the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Identify, classify, and report deficiencies; coordinate corrective maintenance with base Civil Engineer shops.
- Review shop drawings and witness acceptance testing for new or modified water-based fire protection installations.
- Maintain an accurate parts inventory-gaskets, packing, seals, test plugs, lubricants, gauges-and order replacements.
- Provide technical guidance to fire department personnel and base customers regarding system operation, limitations, and ITM requirements.
- Participate in annual training, quarterly readiness drills, and safety stand-downs; ensure personal protective equipment and testing tools are serviceable.
- Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with contractual, functional, and mission requirements.
Job Requirements
Mandatory:
- High School Diploma or equivalent. (Preferred: Associate degree or certificate in Fire Protection Technology or related field.)
- NFPA 25 Certificate of Compliance for Water-Based Systems Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance.
- NICET Level III certification in Fire Protection Water-Based Systems.
- 3+ years of hands-on ITM experience with water-based fire suppression systems.
- Working knowledge of UFC 3-601-02, NFPA 25, DoDI 6055.06, AFI 32-2001, AFI 91-203.
- Keen attention to detail and strict adherence to technical standards.
- Mechanical aptitude and proficiency with test equipment (flow meters, pressure gauges, multimeters).
- Strong written and oral communication for reporting, recordkeeping, and customer briefings.
- Effective coordination with multi-disciplinary teams and external contractors.
- Self-motivated, organized, and able to manage multiple inspection schedules.
- Ability to deal with a variety of people in a professional, courteous manner in diversified situations.
- Physical Requirements: Meet NFPA 1582 medical standards; entering pump rooms and working in confined or elevated spaces.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, drive, kneel, squat, bend, crawl, stoop, reach, climb ladders.
- Ability to lift to 50 pounds.
- Ability to obtain and maintain government identification/common access card and Security Clearance.
- Ability to successfully pass any background checks and/or drug testing required on the contract.
- Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record pertinent to the position.
- U.S. Citizenship.
Working Conditions:
- Field work in pump houses, mechanical rooms, rooftops, and confined spaces.
- Exposure to noise, heat, humidity, and occasional chemical agents.
- May require after-hours or weekend testing to meet installation readiness priorities.
- Mandatory participation in monthly safety drills and annual fitness assessments.
