Position Summary

The Director of Health and Safety will support the VP of EHSS and lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Carpenter Technology Corp's health and safety programs. This role ensures compliance with state and federal regulations while driving a proactive safety culture through innovative solutions and stakeholder engagement. The Director will serve as the primary subject matter expert on all Health and Safety topics for the VP of EHSS.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership:
    • Provide guidance for corporate Safety, Security Management, Fire, and Emergency Response teams.
    • Develop and execute Health and Safety strategies aligned with company goals.
    • Manage and mentor direct reports and site-level safety professionals.
    • Foster collaboration across departments to integrate safety into operations.
  • Technical Advisory Support:
    • Provide technical support to Site Management and Health and Safety professionals.
    • Analyze incident data to proactively address risks.
    • Enhance utilization of the safety management system (Benchmark).
  • Risk Management and Compliance:
    • Ensure compliance with state and federal health and safety regulations.
    • Prepare regular compliance reports.
    • Manage Contractor Safety Program and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response:
    • Manage emergency preparedness and response programs.
    • Develop robust incident response protocols.
    • Direct investigations of serious incidents and near misses to ensure corrective actions.
  • Training and Development:
    • Design and deliver Health and Safety training programs.
    • Promote a proactive safety culture through engagement and accountability.
    • Lead corporate-wide safety campaigns and recognition programs.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Communication:
    • Enhance communication strategies for internal and external stakeholders.
    • Represent the company in health and safety forums when needed.
  • Performance Metrics and Accountability:
    • Establish and monitor KPIs for Health and Safety performance.
    • Develop audit strategies to identify gaps and corrective measures.
    • Report progress toward safety targets to leadership.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Environmental Science, Masters Degree a plus), Safety Management, Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of Health and Safety experience, including 3 years in leadership.
  • General knowledge of environmental programs preferred.

Certifications:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or similar certifications are a plus.

Relevant Work Experience:

  • Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations and best practices.
  • Proven track record of implementing successful safety programs.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and drive cross-functional cooperation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Additional Skills:

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor.
