Job Overview:

The Advanced Practice Nurse Lead is the key leader for the Wound Care Department at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. The APN lead coordinates nursing care and practice as well as wound care activities in conjunction with the philosophy, policies, procedures and program plans of the hospital. Evaluates appropriateness of wound consult patients, coordinates care/patient education and follow-up. Acts as a liaison with physicians and other health care team members. Participates in house-wide skin/wound care programs for staff education and patient care as needed including Prevalence and Competency Days. Develops and participates in unit PI Assumes some varied and flexible scheduling to meet patient and staff needs. Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient's age specific needs and provide age specific treatment and care.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Master's degree in nursing required.
  • Current license as a registered professional nurse in the State of New Jersey.
  • Certification by the New Jersey Board of Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Certified Wound Ostomy and Continence preferred.
  • Successful completion of a UHMS-Designated Introductory course in Hyperbaric Medicine within 6 months of hire.

Experience:

  • Two to five years relevant clinical experience.

Essential Functions:

* Assists with administrative duties of the department- these include, but are not limited to:

  • Daily schedule maintenance
  • Payroll
  • Monitoring/editing of billing
  • Assist with performance evaluations
  • Assist with Interviews
  • OPPE/FPPE
  • Training of new employees
  • Education of staff
  • Monitor staff files (current licensure, certifications, etc.)
  • Employee counseling (action plans, FPPE, etc.)
  • Assist with inventory and ordering of supplies
  • Acts as a department representative to hospital committees* Department Director designee when necessary
  • Assists with department improvement projects:
  • Creation of departmental educational manuals
  • Creation of annual skill day
  • Facilitating educational sessions with specialists
  • Conducts staff meetings
  • Supervisory role for staff
  • Maintains knowledge of the institutional strategic plan and future vision, and communicated that information to staff.
  • Reviews/revises scope of service and participates in joint planning and program development with all health care team members to meet changing patient care needs.
  • Acts as a role model in customer relations and assesses and responds to information regarding patient and family satisfaction.
  • Coordinates and integrates services within the department and with other departments.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support those services.
  • Determines the qualification and competence of department personnel who provide patient care services.
  • Oversees appropriate credentialing and privileging of team members.
  • Ensures appropriate APN joint protocol development and annual revision.
  • Assurance of competence of nurses through development of appropriate orientation, training and continuing education.
  • Development of outreach program to expand wound care referral base and maintain current referral relationships.
  • Assists with marketing of Wound Care team
  • Development of outreach education to referring facilities.
  • Acts as a liaison and coordinates continuity of care of burn and wound management patients from admission to discharge and follow-up with other members of the health care team.
  • Acts as a resource person for other nursing staff to expand their skills and knowledge base related to wound treatment. Provides house-wide wound care education, instructs at nursing competency day and participates in specialty bed selection.
  • Adheres to Infection Control practices / policies and issues related to wound care. Utilizes standard precautions for all patient encounters.
  • Assists in development of protocols and standards related to the needs of wound/ ostomy patients both and inpatient and outpatient basis.
  • Coordinates data collection and tracking related to treatment of wound/ ostomy patients
  • Educates new hires during orientation (i.e. equipment, supplies, products.
  • Maintains the role of patient advocate and takes all appropriate measures to ensure patient satisfaction. Reports patient/family complaints and problems to appropriate nursing management personnel.
  • Monitors and assesses wounds, assists with complex wound care/dressings. Formulates and revises plan of care, makes assessments, recommendations and gives instructions on wound management specific to individual patient needs.
  • Participates with other members of the health care team on a regular basis to develop an optimal education plan for each patient.
  • Reviews PI measures related to wound care, assists with implementation of new processes to meet established benchmarks.

May be required to provide coverage in the Wound and Burn Healing Center as needed.
