Automotive Mechanic Intern (High School)

In this position, you will collaborate closely with the Mechanic Supervisor to develop essential skills for safe and efficient work in an automotive garage. You will learn to perform general repairs and maintenance on cars and light trucks, assisting with various tasks as needed. Once you demonstrate your knowledge, you will be able to use power, hand, and air tools effectively. Maintaining a clean work area and properly caring for tools and equipment will also be part of your responsibilities. It is essential to ask questions whenever you face uncertainties or new challenges, and to consistently practice safety procedures. You will gain a foundational understanding of general repairs and preventative maintenance, including oil changes, tire replacements, brake inspections, and more. Additionally, you will learn to document repairs, comprehend work orders, and handle tools and equipment properly. Emphasizing safety is crucial, as you will be trained to observe and follow safety protocols in the garage, including handling hazardous materials. As you progress, you may assist more experienced tradespeople with complex repairs, such as engine rebuilds or transmission work. The role may also require travel to various work sites and participation in field activities across the District and state.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Work schedule will vary based on agreement between high school and COPA location
• High School Internship beginning 07/01/25 - 06/30/26.
  • Senior enrolled in High School 2025-2026 - The internship would be available through the 2025-2026 school year.
  • Junior enrolled in High School 2025-2026 - The internship would go through the 2025-2026 school year, summer 2026, and 2026-2027 school year.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS
Internship Requirements:

• You must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire.
• You must be a junior or senior enrolled in high school during the 2025 - 2026 school year.

Additional Requirements:

• Letter of Recommendation: You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school's co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating you meet your school's requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity.
• By participating in this program, the student and school agree to use the Commonwealth's Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation. Forms will be provided to the student upon acceptance of this position.
• Work Permit: Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position.
• Must be a vo-tech (career and technical center) student in an approved vocational program that has provided preparation and training for the duties of this internship
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
