| Position Summary |
This is a senior lab animal care position in an
AAALAC accredited animal research facility at the University of Georgia campus. Incumbent will perform all aspects of animal care and husbandry in
ABSL-1 and
ABSL-2 environments utilizing multiple species of animals including but not limited to
USDA covered species. This position will report to the Laboratory Animal Facilities Supervisor in the incumbent's assigned facility. Provides for the daily care and husbandry of animals including feeding, watering, sanitation, animal health surveillance, enrichment and environmental monitoring following established schedules and procedures. Monitors animals daily for overall health status. Work involves performing sanitation duties following prescribed schedules and methods. Performs prophylactic treatments for animals and other technical procedures as directed. Operates autoclaves, pressure washers, auto water systems, biological safety cabinets, and
IVC
HEPA racks. Maintains essential records such as animal room logs, census activity sheets, cage card inventory and
AUP transfers in ANOPs, etc. Assist with the receiving, health assessment, handling, and identification of animals as directed. Performs minor preventative maintenance duties and integrated pest management (
IPM) tasks following established schedules. Assist in quality assurance and standard operating procedures development. Ensures animals and vivarium are appropriately maintained following standard operating procedures, institutional policies, and supervisor's instructions. Participates in staff meetings, continuing education and training classes as directed. Transports equipment, supplies, and animals. Provides assistance to animal care staff and research personnel. Assists the facility supervisor in overseeing four animal facilities housing a variety of species. Acts as a liaison between facility users and the facility supervisor to support effective communication and operations. Performs other duties as assigned. |
| Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies |
- Ability to perform animal husbandry duties in an ABSL-1 & ABSL-2 research environments utilizing common laboratory animal species.
- Have knowledge of the Guide for the Care & Use of Laboratory Animals.
- Job involves careful attention to detail; good communication and keen observational skills.
- Ability to promote and foster teamwork in order to meet program and research objectives is essential.
- Participation in UGA's Occupational Health & Safety program is needed and may include vaccinations, spirometry and respirator fit testing.

| Physical Demands |
- Withstand sustained periods of physical activity such as standing, bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and lift 50 pounds.
- Work sometimes under challenging conditions (high humidity/temperature, unpleasant odors, animal excreta and noise).
- Work involves some exposure to biohazards, potentially fractious animals, chemicals and/or physical risks, which involve following established safety procedures.
- Wear personal protective equipment and stand on hard surfaces for prolonged periods of time.
- This position will involve participation in the research occupational health and safety program which may include specific vaccinations before entering restricted facilities.
