Position Overview
| Essential Job Duties |
The Callahan Lab at NC State University (https://callahanlab.cvm.ncsu.edu/team/) is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to study the transfer of
DNA between bacteria (horizontal gene transfer;
HGT) by viruses (also known as "transduction"). The successful candidate will lead the computational and quantitative analysis of novel datasets that combine metagenomics and metaproteomics to investigate transduction in real microbial communities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- The postdoctoral scholar will lead the data analysis component of a multi-institutional project funded by NIH-NIAID to investigate horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in host-associated microbial communities mediated by viruses (transduction).
- This will include the analysis of combined metagenomics/metaproteomics data from new experiments, the evaluation of current methods used in that analysis, and the conception and implementation of new computational methods for improving the analysis of metagenomic/metaproteomic data.
- Participation in monthly project meetings with collaborators, presentation of research at conferences and preparation of manuscripts.

| Department Required Skills |
- A PhD in the life sciences OR the computational/quantitative sciences.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Two references that can speak to the candidate's potential for meaningful contributions to science.

- Experience analyzing high-throughput biological data, such as shotgun metagenomics data,RNA-seq, or LC-MS/MS based proteomics data.
- Proficiency using the command line and data science platforms such as R or Python.
