Department Summary

The Center for Human Identification (CHI) is an accredited forensic laboratory located on the campus of UNT Health at Fort Worth. With funding from the state of Texas and various Federal Government agencies, CHI supports DNA testing, forensic genetic genealogy, anthropological examinations, CODIS operations, forensic training, and cutting-edge research and development initiatives. CHI also manages the Texas Missing Persons DNA Database.

Position Overview

The CODIS Administrator is the system administrator of the laboratory's CODIS network and is responsible for the security of DNA profile data stored within CODIS.

The CODIS Administrator serves as the central point of contact in the laboratory for CODIS, and as the gatekeeper for DNA records entered into CODIS. This position is responsible for the technical operations of the CODIS Unit and supervises the Alternate CODIS Administrator.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate degree in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science or related field, and five (5) years of forensic DNA laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Knowledge of FBI QAS document
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel


Preferred Qualifications

All of the following qualifications are highly preferred:



  • Graduate degree in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science or a related field, and five (5) years of CODIS experience in a NDIS participating forensic DNA laboratory as a currently or previously qualified analyst with documented mixture interpretation training.
    - Previous mtDNA competency is required
    - Supervisory experience preferred, but not required


Job Duties



  • Administer and approve CODIS computer training for laboratory staff.
  • Serve as the system administrator of the local CODIS network (includes forensic casework and missing persons' database samples)
  • Oversee the quality of data entered into the local CODIS database. Assure that the quality of data within CODIS is in accordance with state and/or federal law and NDIS operational procedures.
  • Participate in CHI's quality management system through internal audits, management reviews, quality working group meetings.
  • Direct supervision of the CODIS Unit, including performance evaluations, leave approvals, disciplinary actions/PIPs/other personal issues, hiring for new positions, assessing qualifications of new CODIS Unit personnel.
  • Oversee CHI's participation in statewide or national CODIS initiatives or working groups.
  • Review NDIS and SDIS operational procedures including any policy changes and ensure laboratory compliance.
  • Serve as the liaison for the State CODIS Administrator and external stakeholders on CODIS-related matters.
  • Work directly with the Casework Laboratory Director to establish CODIS Unit performance metrics and efficiency tracking.
  • Perform routine searches of databases and coordinate responses to DNA match and exclusion reports. Assure that matches are dispositioned in a timely manner in accordance with NDIS operational procedures.
  • Administration of the CHI's Humanitarian DNA Database, including stakeholder outreach to support expansion efforts.
  • Review and/or approve, as appropriate, protocols or procedures for the entry, searching and match resolution of DNA records in the state/local DNA database(s).
  • Receive the required training on new CODIS software platforms as available and oversee the administration of CODIS computer training for laboratory staff.
  • Oversee all computer maintenance and upgrades in conjunction with FBI recommendations.
  • Notify State CODIS Administrator of addition/removal/update of CODIS user information.
  • Ensure that CODIS user(s) successfully complete the required annual training.
  • Notify the SDIS/NDIS Custodian as appropriate and in accordance with the NDIS operational procedures.
  • Backup of CODIS data.
  • Compilation and monthly reporting of applicable metrics, including providing support to Technical Leaders for federally sponsored awards.
  • Completion of the annual audit certification.
  • Perform all computer maintenance and upgrades in conjunction with FBI recommendations. Report software problems to the CODIS help desk to assist in software development and troubleshooting.
