Description

We are seeking a General Counsel to join our team.

Starting Salary: $150,000

The General Counsel is responsible for providing legal guidance and support across all areas of Cornerstones of Care, ensuring compliance with applicable federal, Kansas, and Missouri laws. This role also serves as a strategic advisor to the executive leadership team and board of directors, offering practical, mission aligned counsel on day-to-day legal matters related to program operations, regulatory requirements, governance, contracts, and risk management. The General Counsel will exercise independent legal judgment in addressing issues as they arise, determine when engagement of external counsel is appropriate, and will work collaboratively with internal and external partners to protect the agency's interests while supporting Cornerstones of Care's three service areas: You and Family Support, Foster Care & Adoption, Education and Training. This role reports to the Chief Administrative Officer.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:



  • Support the Chief Administrative Officer with liability insurance and risk management, including working directly with the agency's broker and carriers on complex and litigated claims.
  • Liaise with external counsel on litigation, complex, or specific matters.
  • Protect Cornerstones of Care's intellectual property as it pertains to program work, logos, trademarks, and proprietary information.
  • This position may interface directly with the board of directors and other executive leadership as matters arise that require internal counsel.
  • Maintain corporate compliance for the agency such as oversight of annual report filings for states in which business is conducted.
  • Manage nexus issues and tax compliance for the agency's out-of-state employees.
  • Review all contracts to protect the agency's interests by ensuring agreements are clear, fair, and legally sound. This includes ensuring Business Associate Agreements are in place as applicable.
  • Act as Cornerstones of Care's Privacy Officer, working directly with the Chief Administrative Officer and IT Security team to manage and advise on HIPAA, data, and privacy matters as they arise.
  • Draft legal and operational documents as required, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with applicable laws, industry and regulatory standards, and agency standards


WHAT YOU WILL BRING:

Our ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of practice in a relevant role and the following:

REQUIREMENTS



  • Juris Degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license in good standing to practice law.
  • Missouri & Kansas Bar License.
  • At least 21 years of age and pass background check, physical, and drug screening.
  • A valid driver's license in the state you reside in, proof of current vehicle insurance, and reliable transportation.
