Description

The Intensive Care Unit is a 10-bed, modern unit specializing in the care of the critically ill adult and elderly adult. Special procedures include but are not limitedto:intubations with mechanical ventilator management, arterial lines, TEE, insertion of temporary pacemakers and external pacing, and cardiac drips. We have an average daily census of 8. This unit alsomonitorsas many as 24 telemetry units.The most frequent medical diagnoses seen are Myocardial Infarction, Congestive Heart Failure, Arrhythmias, COPD, Septic Shock, CVA, Overdoses, Hypertensive Crisis,Pneumoniaand DKA.Common surgical conditionsareAppendectomy, Exploratory laparotomy, Cholecystectomy (laparoscopic and open procedures), Bowel Resection,Hysterectomyand Amputation.

The Spohn Kleberg ICU team is known for theirexpertise, loyalty,teamworkand dedication. They are excellent mentors and have helped many new nurses and students succeed. They provide excellent patient care and strive for customer satisfaction, which isevidentby the unit consistently exceeding Press Ganey scores.The associates are involved with hospital committees andspecial events. Summary:

Under general supervision by a licensed professional, the Patient Sitter is responsible for monitoring assigned patients within the hospital. They alert staff to patient needs and may assist with basic patient care and feeding.

Responsibilities:


  • Under the direction of a licensed professional, provides sitter services for the patient who has an order for 1:1 staffing. The Patient Sitter watches over the patient and ensures the patient is in a safe environment at all times.
  • The Patient Sitter will report to the nurse or charge nurse should the patient try to get out of bed, pull on their tubes, or display other behavior that may cause harm to themselves or others.
  • Suicide and high-risk patients MUST be attended at all times.
  • The Patient Sitter must have the ability to maintain appropriate precautions for suicidal patients as indicated in the Suicidal Patient Policy.
  • The Patient Sitter must have the ability to maintain visual contact with the patient at all times, including toileting.
  • The Patient Sitter may provide assistance with direct patient care under the direction of a licensed professional. These duties may include turning, feeding, bathing, and bathroom needs.
  • The Patient Sitter must communicate with the patient care team to include other Patient Sitters, CNAs, LVNs, or RNs by receiving report at the beginning of the shift.
  • The Patient Sitter must accompany the patient while off the floor for procedures and may not take the patient to smoke, to the cafeteria or gift shop.

Requirements:

Education/Skills


  • High School diploma or equivalent

Experience


  • Previous related experience preferred

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications


  • CPR (American Heart Association)
  • BLS
  • De-escalation training required within 90 days of hire/transfer date

6AM - 6PM 12 HR Shift
