This position is responsible for interacting with youth on probation for the purpose of implementing case plans, and making referrals to appropriate community programs. Administrative duties will be assigned to Assistant Probation Officers by their supervisor.


Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree or equivalent of two years post-secondary education in Corrections, Counseling, Criminal Justice, Education, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or related Human Services field AND one year experience in Corrections, Human Services Treatment Programs, or related experience.
OR
Three years' experience in Corrections, Human Services Treatment Programs, or related experience.
OR
Combination of education and experience to equal three or more years.
Required license(s):
* Valid driver's license required
* First Aid/CPR certificate within 6 months of hire. Training is provided.

Preferred qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Corrections, Counseling, Criminal Justice, Education, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or related Human Services field.

To be eligible for hire, an applicant must successfully complete a background check and meet the criminal history background criteria required to access certain networks/systems necessary to perform the essential functions of this position. The law and/or County policy will disqualify applicants with a particular criminal history background from employment in this position.

"Safety-sensitive position" means a position, including any supervisory or management position, in which impairment caused by drug, alcohol, or cannabis use would threaten the health and safety of any person as defined in Minnesota Statutes Section 181.950, subdivision 13.


Duties & Responsibilities

These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.

  1. Assist the Juvenile Intake Unit with juvenile restitution investigations, including gathering financial information, contacting victims, and documenting restitution-related findings.
  2. Provide secure transportation of youth between the Juvenile Services Center and other secure facilities. Supervise youth in custody awaiting court appearances, including supervision during virtual court hearings at the Juvenile Services Center.
  3. Work with Evidence Based Practices Coordinator to schedule cognitive behavioral groups. This staff person contacts youth/families to set up and troubleshoot transportation and other arrangements. This staff person will use a County vehicle to transport youth.
    • Facilitate Cognitive Behavioral intervention groups on a rotating basis with other probation agents.

    • Supervise youth at on-site community events and programs.. Use evidence-based practices such as motivational interviewing to manage youths' behaviors, and to help restructure their thinking. Establish and maintain contact with youths' probation officers to assure coordinated interventions. PLEASE NOTE: There will be occasional need for this person to work some flexible weekday evenings.
  4. Manage fingerprinting for all youth on probation as directed by court order.

    • Schedule youth to be fingerprinted at one of the County locations. Assist the youth/family with transportation if needed.
    • Complete fingerprinting process.
  5. Do GPS hook ups and removals at youths' homes or other community locations.
  6. Collect UAs and DNA samples from youth in County buildings, youths' homes or other community locations.
  7. Make collateral contacts involved in the youths' programming as necessary.
  8. Manage/maintain records as well as other administrative duties.
  9. Respond to youth/family questions, concerns, and emergencies.
  10. Make referrals to appropriate resources.

  • Knowledge of and the ability to operate several complex computer systems such as MNCIS, MGA, CSTS, OnBase, Statewide Supervision System, CJIIN and Microsoft Office. Ability to resolve problems related to these computer systems.
  • Ability to work under stress and use discretion in making decisions.
  • Ability to advise people in crisis situations and make decision leading to crisis resolution.
  • Ability to prioritize work according to youth/family and agency need.
  • Ability to assess a youth's/family's social, economic, and health needs: chemical, mental, and physical with consideration of their identity.
  • Ability to utilize motivational interviewing, victim empathy skills and other evidence-based practices.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in County office buildings and offsite locations. As in person services resume, much of the work will occur evenings. The position has a lifting requirement of up to 20 pounds on an occasional basis and 10 pounds on a frequent basis. Because it requires gathering UA and DNA samples, this position can be exposed to hazardous materials such as chemicals, blood, and other body fluids Under those circumstances, the person is supplied with and is expected to wear personal protective equipment. Types of equipment used include computer, telephone, and copy and fax machines, 2-way radios, and audio and visual equipment. Pursuant to Dakota County Policy and Procedures Manual Section 3240 (13), this position is designated as Safety Sensitive.
