The Engineering Manager is responsible for the Manufacturing Engineering, Facility Engineering, and Maintenance groups and their budgets; as well as planning and managing the Capital budgets and projects, develops staff, and provides technical expertise to Manufacturing and the Facility. The Engineering Manager provides leadership relating to equipment productivity improvement, process capability & improvement, material handling, methods & process improvement, Ergonomics & Safety, and building projects. Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide daily support and leadership for the Manufacturing Engineering, Facility Engineering, and Maintenance groups
- Lead new equipment research, justification, Design, acquisition, and implementation.
- Lead planning and managing the Capital budgets and projects throughout the Facility
- Support the goals of manufacturing / production group and the site
- Trouble-shoot mechanical processes on all production lines with regard to their performance, manufacturability, and competitiveness.
- Develops and initiates standard practices for preventive maintenance activities and inventory control
- Lead and train predictive maintenance concepts
- Optimize spare parts inventory through historical usage evaluation and predictive tools
- Develop and lead preventive maintenance program, including effective use of CMMS system for maintenance scheduling and parts management.
- Hold maintenance and engineering teams accountable for following visual workplace standards of 5S and housekeeping
- Develop local machine shop and contractor relationships, including establishing multiple support sources for infrastructure and critical equipment and systems
- Develop contingency plans for infrastructure and equipment failures
- Partner with all Spectrum Brands manufacturing sites to share best practices and create support programs for parts and talent sharing as needed
- Prepares complete proposals and timelines for implementation and follows through to completion on a project management basis.
- Develop staff to insure the future growth of the organization
- Assist staff in leading process improvements which reduce manufacturing costs and increase production efficiencies throughout the facility.
- Work within specific project objectives and recommend appropriate ideas and technical solutions to challenges with new products and processes. Contribute to the development of innovative process improvements with ideas, concepts, collaboration and intellectual property.
- Work with inside and outside resources to procure materials & mechanisms, develop designs, and refine systems involving process improvements, technology enhancements, and ergonomic improvements.
- Develop new prototype designs/apparatus/test methods by leveraging appropriate resources to validate performance and demonstrate efficiency of new materials or processes.
- Collect, organize and analyze data from a variety of sources, make conclusions and recommendations and provide regular progress reports on projects.
- Maintain current awareness of new technology and developments relevant to areas of specialty.
- Use oral and written communication skills to update management, peers and team members of work progress and findings. Participate in cross-functional meetings and interface effectively with other functional areas. Where necessary, form teams to facilitate improvement programs.
- Perform various tasks as specified, warranted, needed, or directed for the good of the site and the organization, in a confidential professional manner befitting a Leader in the Spectrum Pet Care organization.
Education and Experience Profile
A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Process related Engineering field:
- 4-year B.S. degree with at least 3-5 years professional technical experience in a production manufacturing environment and at least 2 years management / supervision experience
Required Skills
A creative, motivated, self-starter, with a demonstrated ability to lead projects or significant portions of projects, with limited supervision. Good written, oral and inter-personal skills and ability to perform well in a high intensity team environment.
