Pay Range:$52.23 - $63.97 Hourly

Job Description

We an opening for a Sr.Environmental Scientific Technologistin the Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Directorate, supporting the Technical Services Department (TSD). In this position you will collaborate with senior technical personnel and scientists to provide technical support in environmental monitoring, compliance sampling, and equipment repair and installation. Field sampling activities may include soil, water, air, vegetation, and other environmental media. This position is in the Monitoring & Sampling Group within TSD.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

In this role you will

  • Provide environmental sampling support for compliance and surveillance networks that include soil and sediment sampling, storm water sampling, stack emissions monitoring, ambient air monitoring for particulate and water vapor (tritium), vegetation sampling, and sewer monitoring activities.
  • Perform soil sampling and field survey activities for construction and demolition projects while interacting with LLNL project managers, construction managers, and multidisciplinary health and safety professionals.
  • Lead soil sampling teams in the field and ensure sample screening and shipping is performed in accordance with established procedures.
  • Obtain and maintain Department of Energy Radiological Control Technician qualification to perform routine and specialized radiological monitoring and surveys in field settings.
  • Observe, take measurements of, and analyze basic data from radiological and soil monitoring equipment, systems, and/or operations to determine compliance with established design or procedures.
  • Provide advanced technical support and perform advanced field tests and analysis on experimental operations in a wide variety of multi-discipline activities.
  • Perform advanced measurements, including obtaining, preparing, and management moderately complex sampling programs.
  • Interact with co-workers, scientists, engineers, and skilled technical personnel and keep team management informed of changes to operations/facilities through regular communication.
  • Complete and maintain training, including qualifications established in Work Control Documents as well as requisite ES&H Technician Training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Associate degreein Environmental Science or a related scientific field, or equivalent combination of education and significant experience.
  • Significant related experiencein environmental sampling, or a related scientific area.
  • Advanced technical skills and knowledgein acquiring, analyzing, and interpreting complex data; demonstrated experience in maintenance and operation of scientific instrumentation and equipment.
  • Experience operating, maintaining, and calibrating sophisticated sampling and detection equipmentor other analytical equipment of similar complexity.
  • Fundamental understanding of standard environmental sampling equipment and procedures for air, water, soils, or vegetation.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skillsto identify and resolve moderately to highly complex technical problems, and to report results using forms, databases, spreadsheets, emails, and direct communication with programmatic personnel, safety disciplines, and management.
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skillsto write clear technical documentation, document surveys, maintenance, work performance, and provide comprehensive technical guidance and training.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Experience directing and performing environmental field sampling in a schedule-driven team environment.
  • Ability to become medically qualifiedto wear respiratory and protective equipment, work with potentially toxic and radioactive materials, apply torque, forceful gripping, pressing and pushing with hands and arms, climb ladders up to 30 ft., carry up to 30 lbs., and perform extensive bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, crawling, balancing, and climbing stairs, including outdoor work.
  • Ability to obtain OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) 24-hour certification.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills and take on new responsibilities.
