What to Expect

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, Lighting Systems, you will be responsible for the design, release and launch of lighting systems for future Tesla vehicle product lines. You will work alongside the most creative and resourceful designers and engineers in the world on a lean and agile team. From concept definition at the industrial design and clay modeling phase, to prototype creation, production design release and launch, you will own the product design through all stages of the design cycle developing the style, integrating the latest technologies and delivering industry-leading lighting systems for all global markets. You will be reporting to the Engineering Manager of Vehicle Lighting Systems within Vehicle Engineering.


What You'll Do
  • Engineer, develop, and execute world-class automotive lamp systems that align with styling intent and meet regulatory requirements
  • Manage projects from clay model feasibility through to production launch
  • Collaborate with Tesla's design and styling team to develop functional layouts that ensure legal compliance and support design themes while integrating new technology solutions
  • Lead cross-functional integration of lighting systems with teams including design, body, exteriors, 12V electronics, manufacturing, supply chain, and supplier engineers to achieve technically feasible designs
  • Participate in iterative processes with stakeholders to balance form, function, performance, and cost
  • Direct Tesla and supplier engineering efforts for lamp development and CAD designs
  • Maintain all required product development documentation, including SOR, DFMEA, and DVP&R

What You'll Bring
  • Minimum of 5 years of product engineering experience, with at least 3 years or 2 product cycles in automotive lamp system and component design
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Proven success in executing automotive lamp programs, with a strong preference for full LED lighting system experience
  • Clear understanding of advanced lighting technologies, including lightguides, light blades, adaptive forward lighting systems, laser, OLED, matrix, and DMD
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude, creativity in design, and ability to execute feasible solutions to complex engineering challenges
  • Comprehensive knowledge of lighting homologation requirements, specifically FMVSS 108 and ECE R48
  • Strong understanding of optical system development processes

    Expected Compensation
    $92,800 - $210,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

    Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
