Pay Range

$175,530 - $267,060 Annually

$175,530 - $222,564 Annually for the SES.3 level

$210,630 - $267,060 Annually for the SES.4 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.


Job Description

We have an opening for aHoisting and Rigging Engineerto serve as the Subject Matter Expert for all crane, hoist, and rigging safety processes. In this role, you will participate in designing, installing, maintaining, repairing, and decommissioning new and existing systems, structures, and components at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) consistent with Department of Energy (DOE), OSHA, and other regulations. You will contribute to the engineering design and development and redesign of hoisting and rigging systems and equipment upgrades to continually improve performance and reliability while meeting the highest standards of safety and rigor. This position will be in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations Division (LSEO) within the Engineering Directorate (ENG) and will report both to the LSEO Associate Division Leader and the ENG Chief Mechanical Engineer. In this role which requires being licensed Professional Engineer, you will provide civil and mechanical engineering expertise and support with focus on hoisting, rigging, and material handling to multiple teams within ENG in support of LLNL programs/projects or Institutional activities.

This position will be filled at the level based on knowledge and related experience.

In this roleyou will:

  • Provide civil, structural, and mechanical engineering solutions to complex issues and problems that require in-depth analysis and frequent use of ingenuity and creativity.
  • Conduct technical tasks and support the design and redesign of both large and small projects to include siting, integrity, suitability, and compatibility.
  • Participate as a member of multidisciplinary teams which utilizes experience in hoisting and rigging safety applications to design unique solutions for systems following established codes and standards.
  • Conduct technical or operational projects and/or support research efforts by adhering to the highest standards of personnel and facility safety while guiding the execution of high-energy, multi-hazard system demonstrations and experiments.
  • Collaborate in the development of innovative methods and technology and incremental advancement of knowledge.
  • Participate in formal and informal design reviews by presenting design materials to inter-organization and external audiences and managing the requirements and specifications used for engineered safety systems.
  • Prepare safety and engineering support documentation and reports needed for successful execution of experiments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level:

  • Provide solutions to highly-complex issues/problems that require in-depth analysis of multiple tangible and intangible factors and where a high-degree of ambiguity exists around techniques and approaches.
  • Use independent judgment and considerable latitude to establish and accomplish objectives.
  • Develop new ideas and redefine customer requirements that impact organizational operations or directions.
  • Direct technical tasks within the development and implementation of comprehensive crane, hoist, and rigging safety programs for ENG with application of applicable DOE, OSHA, ASME, and other standards and regulations.
  • Develop and implement safety policies and procedures for hoisting and rigging.
  • Act as primary liaison for ENG with DOE organizations and LLNL ES&H team on hoisting and rigging compliance, regulations, training, research and design solutions, and information dissemination.
  • Participate as a member of the Institutional Hoisting and Rigging committee.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Professional Engineer license in Civil, Civil/Structural, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience in hoisting and rigging systems and related civil and/or mechanical engineering, including advanced knowledge of and aptitude toward design, structural, validation, testing, suitability, and evaluation of conformity with applicable codes and standards.
  • Advanced application and development of technical, business, or operational principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to independently contribute to technical projects or support of programs using creativity and innovation.
  • Advanced experience with ANSI, ASME, and OSHA lifting equipment requirements, which includes performing or validating calculations and crane/ hoisting & rigging system designs.
  • Applied experience with DOE or equivalent US government requirements for hoisting, rigging, and material handling.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including the ability to direct and mentor other team members.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical or operational information and provide advice to management, regulators, reviewers, and stakeholders.
  • Advanced analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to evaluate, interpret, negotiate, recommend, and implement actions/solutions for moderately complex problems.
  • Advanced experience working independently and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations, managing complex projects, and meeting schedules.

Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level:

  • Expert level application and development of technical, business, or operational principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to independently contribute to technical projects or support of programs using creativity and innovation.
  • Subject matter expert knowledge and application of highly-advanced concepts of civil and/or mechanical design and analysis.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, and advise senior management, external sponsors, regulators, reviewers, and stakeholders.
  • Subject matter expert knowledge of systems engineering principles, practices, and applications for hoisting and rigging applications and regulations.
