JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Upward Bound Programs (UBP), is seeking Instructors for the 2026 Summer Academy, which will be held June 15- July 31. Upward Bound Programs is a federally funded program at Penn State that prepares low-income, first-generation high school students for future success in college.

The UB Summer Academy plans to host approximately 40 students for in-person and virtual instruction and programming during a week - three weeks that will offer a taste of college life as well as assistance with academic courses.

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Deliver specific content area instruction that promotes effective learning skills and mentoring.
  • Instructors will deliver approximately 20-30 hours of instruction per course.
  • Attend professional development and orientation programming beginning in April through the start of the Summer Academy in June.
  • Instructors will attend approximately 20-25 hours of professional development before the Summer Academy begins.
  • Creating a course scope and sequence to be delivered to Upward Bound Curriculum and Pedagogy Coordinator by June 1, 2025.
  • Planning historically and culturally relevant and responsive lessons for diverse high school students from across Central and Eastern Pennsylvania.
  • Build authentic, meaningful, and professional relationships with high school students.
  • Maintaining all course materials.
  • Attending all scheduled course sessions.
  • Maintaining attendance records.
  • Attending Instructor Hours during student Orientation during the first week of the program.
  • Escorting students to and from Lunch on teaching days.
  • Communicating efficiently and clearly with all Upward Bound staff and Residential Mentors.

Instructors are encouraged to use inquiry-based teaching methods, field trips and activities, and other creative means to support their lessons. An interest in incorporating a Social Justice theme into curriculum is highly desired. Instructors are needed in the following high school content areas:

  • Critical Reading and Writing
  • Math - including Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Trig/Pre-Calc, and Calculus
  • Science - including Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Earth Science, Physics, and Engineering
  • World Languages
  • Electives, including art and other courses not listed above.

Candidates who have at least a bachelor's degree with relevant teaching experience, are an undergraduate student majoring in Education or related field, or an undergraduate student with extensive teaching assistant experience are preferred.

Applicants should possess excellent written/oral communication skills and must be committed to helping underrepresented students realize their potential.

There are many in-person and only a few remote instructional positions available.

The pay for this position is $25.00 per hour.

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
