General Notes

The Public Safety Officer will monitor and assist with the security and protection of university buildings and properties. Provide friendly and quality information to students, employees, and visitors to The University of Texas at Austin. .

Purpose

Providing security services and information to students and staff and protecting university buildings and property. Responsible for ensuring the safety of students, faculty, and staff and protecting University buildings and property.

Responsibilities
  • Provides assistance to the public by checking passes of personnel entering or leaving grounds and buildings
  • Issues visitor passes and gives directions to university buildings or offices. Maintains after hour visitor log.
  • Inspects and secures grounds, buildings and research laboratories for fire and other safety hazards.
  • Maintains surveillance using electronic monitoring equipment
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of all regulations and procedures contained in the Security Manual.
  • Performs administrative duties to include issuing keys, operating switchboard and raising and lowering the flag. Performs related duties as assigned for the guard -security.
  • May remove or detain unauthorized persons found on premises. Inspects fire protection, firefighting, and other safety equipment for proper operations. Checks parking permits on vehicles entering parking lots.
  • May direct flow of traffic and parking of cars. Issues pass through or visitor's permits when needed. Issues traffic and parking violation citations.
Required Qualifications

Applicant must have graduated from a high school, vocational school or equivalent or have passed a General Education Development (GED) Test. Must be 18 years of age. Must possess a valid Driver's License. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. Ability to operate a handheld radio.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in public safety, security, law enforcement, or military service. Demonstrated customer service or community-oriented experience. Familiarity with security technology, such as CCTV systems or access control systems.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$31,200 + depending on qualifications

Work Shift
  • Day, evening, night shift, holidays and weekend work every other month.
  • Some severe weather work will be required.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
