Position Overview
The Math and Science Center instructor will develop and implement content-area curriculum for high school students who are participating in a five-week educational institute at KU during the summer, and serve as a role model for participants. Classes are held Monday - Friday, June 1 -July 2, 2026. Orientation for instructors is tentatively scheduled for May 26 and May 27, 2026. These positions are on-going temporary summer appointments.

Primary Objective: Prepare students in subject areas they may expect to encounter during the upcoming academic year with a focus on learning study skills that will help students succeed in these classes.

Secondary Objective: Motivate students toward college and assist in building their self-esteem and sense of achievement

Open for the following Subject Areas:
  • 1 Foreign Language (Chinese Mandarin, Latin, American Sign Language, Italian, Korean etc.)
  • 1 Math Instructor (Must be able to teach Algebra 1 through Calculus)
  • 1 Science Instructor (Astronomy, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, Biology, etc.)
  • 1 English
  • 1 Engineering or Computer Science
The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by the effective date of the appointment. KU is not able to provide immigration sponsorship for this position.

Job Description
30% - Develop and implement content-area curriculum/lesson plans. Execute the plans by teaching them to the participants while working independently or with a team.

20% - Assess students' cognitive needs, develop a curriculum to address those needs, and provide assistance to residence hall staff in meeting participants' cognitive needs. Develop a thorough understanding of the project's overall goals and assist with a challenging program of study that will promote success and generate confidence within each student.

15% - Become familiar with and closely follow program instructor policies, procedures, and use professional ethics. Identify and assist in providing resources needed to implement curriculum.

15% - Complete weekly progress reports and final grade reports for each student. Maintain accurate participant attendance records. Attend all training sessions and staff meetings conducted on Thursday evenings from 3:30pm to 4:30pm.

15% - Provide or make arrangements for curriculum materials such as textbooks, readers or instructional aides to be made available to student participants. Prepare and submit daily homework and/or missing assignments to the Math and Science Center Director.

5% - Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements
This position is on-site at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS.

Required Qualifications
  1. 60+ undergraduate hours at the end of 2026 spring semester
  2. Experience tutoring, teaching, and/or instructing students as demonstrated by application materials

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree
  2. Graduate credit
  3. Experience with students from a wide range of cultures as evidenced by application materials
  4. Subject area teaching expertise and experience as evidenced by application materials
  5. Experience with Federal TRIO Programs as evidenced by application materials
