Professional Experience/ Qualifications
The University Museums at Colgate University is seeking an Outreach Coordinator to assess off-campus community needs and opportunities for partnerships, programs, and engagement with the University Museums (Picker Art Gallery and Longyear Museum of Anthropology). This is a part-time (20 hours a week), benefits-eligible position funded by the New York State Council on the Arts through December 2026. The person in this position will be responsible for conducting a community needs assessment; collaborating with other campus partners dedicated to community engagement; building relationships with local schools, teachers, and arts and cultural organizations; encouraging and coordinating community and school visits; and developing strategies for enhancing visitor experience for off-campus audiences.

  • Strong communication skills: written, verbal, and especially face-to-face
  • Experience designing and implementing educational outreach programs
  • 2+ years of experience working with community stakeholders
  • Evidence of cultural competency and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and other productivity software


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of local area, including arts organizations
  • Prior experience working in museums or arts and cultural organizations, or in arts education
  • Experience designing and implementing programs for public audiences, including school groups
  • Experience coordinating volunteers, interns, or students
  • 5+ years of experience working in community engagement, especially in an arts or cultural capacity or in central New York


Education

  • Required: High School diploma or GED
  • Preferred: BA in Education, Museum Studies, Art History, Anthropology or Teacher Certification, Studio Art or other relevant degree

The Outreach Coordinator will play a vital role in helping the museum to successfully and sustainably achieve these goals.
Accountabilities
Responsibilities:

  • Assessing community needs, demographics, potential museum audiences, and opportunities for partnerships
  • Building strong relationships with area K-12 educators
  • Creating positive experiences with University Museums for school and community visitors
  • Representing the University Museums at community events
  • Maintaining collaborative relationships with relevant campus partners
  • Developing active outreach to community groups, schools, teachers, and arts and cultural organizations
