What you'll do

As a mechanical engineer intern in the Atlanta, GA (Duluth) office, you will have the opportunity to design, test, and investigate complex antenna systems used in a variety of applications and platforms worldwide for both commercial and government customers. Viasat has deployed mobility antennas on airborne platforms, residential terminals in underserved communities, and ground stations around the globe. Each antenna system has a unique set of technical, environmental, and site requirements to understand and meet.

In this role, you will be responsible for designing, upgrading, and maintaining precision positioning systems (motors, gearboxes, gearing, encoders) and electromechanical RF structures (reflectors, feeds, and flat panel arrays) with an emphasis on reliability and customer satisfaction. You will work on multiple projects and tasks at any given time supporting a mix of government and commercial hardware. You will be empowered to coordinate with a dynamic, multi-functional team with strong personal ownership and vision.


The day-to-day

This role would focus on sustainment and new development of ground systems antenna products and team initiatives by:

  • Design, analysis, review, and justification of new parts, assemblies, modifications, or fixtures
  • Investigation and resolution of manufacturability, quality, and supplier issues for components and sub-assemblies
  • Creation and validation of test plans and procedures to validate hardware onsite or at supplier
  • Hands-on factory and field support, alongside the operations and engineering teams
  • Solving problems with a data-driven, multidisciplinary team approach

Internship Program Details:

  • You will work onsite at a Viasat office location for the duration of your internship. Viasat embraces a flexible work environment and onsite/hybrid work is determined by individual roles and teams.

  • Housing and relocation assistance are available to interns pending eligibility.

  • To ensure equity across our intern population, intern compensation is pre-determined based on a variety of factors including: role, location, and final graduation date. Intern compensation is non-negotiable.


What you'll need

Requirements:

  • Education:
    • Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
    • To be eligible for this position your final graduation date must fall between December 2026 and August 2027
  • Internship Dates: You must be available to work 40 hours/week for the full duration of the internship program as outlined in the cohort dates below. Limited exceptions may be granted. Viasat offers two options based on semester and quarter academic calendars:

    • Cohort 1: May 18, 2026 - August 14, 2026

    • Cohort 2: June 22, 2026 - September 18, 2026

  • Additional:
    • Experience with standard industry 3D CAD software
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
    • US Citizenship required

What will help you on the job

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • SolidWorks modeling and drawing experience
  • Familiarity with ASME drawing standards and guidelines
  • Exposure to basic GD&T concepts and applications
  • Understanding of metal fabrication processes and tolerances, especially machining, casting, welding, and sheet forming processes
  • Previous relevant internship experience

Salary range

$20.91 - $56.97 / hourly.
For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $25.96 - $67.07/ hourly
