Manage in coordination with the Director of Respiratory Services, medical staff and in compliance with organizational goals, the Pulmonary, Respiratory Therapy Services, and the Bronchoscopy Lab at both USC University Hospital and USC Norris Cancer Hospital. The candidate will have additional management responsibilities of Cardiology Services at Norris Cancer Hospital.

Essential Duties:

  • Basic understanding of fair labor practices, workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, and other personnel related matters.
  • Knowledge of technical, professional, and legal requirements of personnel under his/her supervision.
  • Sound working knowledge of the field of respiratory care and related services.
  • Knowledge of the importance of infection control procedures and prevention of cross contamination and methods of decontamination of respiratory care equipment.
  • Knowledge of the medications used in the areas of service relative to the position.
  • Possess a high degree of interpersonal skills to counsel, communicate, and effectively manage a wide variety of professionals.
  • Ability to perform as an RCP staff member when necessary.
  • Demonstrates both job and personal maturity for frequent professional interaction with patients, physicians, and nurses as well as other health care team members.
  • The ability to be clear and concise in both verbal and written communication and a service-oriented presentation in general are required.
  • Responsible for directing departmental goal setting on an annual basis in support of the organizational goals.
  • Coordinating closely with the Nursing Services, all lab nurse coordinators and staff as well as with the appropriate Medical Staff of each service to ensure the proper functioning of all related services.
  • Responsible for developing a staffing and scheduling plan for all areas, taking into consideration the specialized patient needs of the various areas and the manpower budget.
  • Responsible for establishing with the Medical staff and the Patient Care Evaluation Department a unit-based quality management program which complies with JCAHO, Title XXII and other applicable regulatory agencies. The program should be outcome oriented and coordinate closely with Hospital's Case management system of patient care delivery.
  • Responsible for working closely with nursing staff and medical staff to implement the case management system, looking for more effective methods of improving patient outcome within an appropriate length of stay.
  • Responsible for developing and monitoring the operational budget each year, continually analyzing both positive and negative variances. Using the budget as a tool to assist in finding more effective methods of care delivery.
  • Responsible for promoting effective communication and working relationships within the responsible areas and between nursing staff, physicians and other departments.
  • Responsible for serving as a coach and mentor to the staff for whom the position is responsible.
  • Plans for provision of services through provision of appropriate levels of qualified, competent staff. Policies and procedure are in place to support scope of service.
  • Responsible for working with the Education Division of Human Resources to ensure that the necessary training is available to the staff in these areas.
  • Responsible for maintaining an equipment plan in coordination with the Medical Staff to ensure the departments remain technologically up-to-date.
  • Monitor space / resource requirements and utilization of outside resources.
  • Provides for orientation, training, and continuing education of staff.
  • Establishes and maintains performance improvement and quality control activities which support the department and the hospital.
  • Coordinates and integrates department services on intradepartmental, interdepartmental, and hospital wide levels.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Associate's degree Associate of Science in Respiratory Care.
  • Req 3 years Experience in a Management position of a Respiratory Care Department in an acute hospital (preferably in an academic environment).
  • Req Demonstrates ability to effectively work with physicians, staff, and patients.
  • Req Demonstrates ability to utilize effective, appropriate and diplomatic oral and written communication skills.
  • Req Demonstrates ability to work independently with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Req Committed to excellence in patient care and customer service.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Bachelor's degree Bachelor of Science degree in Respiratory Care, Health Care Management or related field.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Respiratory Care Practitioner - RCP (CA DCA)
  • Req Registered Respiratory Therapist - RRT (NBRC) OR Certified (CRTT)
  • Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only).

The annual base salary range for this position is $110,240.00 - $181,896.00.
