Where You'll Work:

The Y12 National Security Complex located in Oak Ridge, TN, plays a vital role in the U.S. Department of Energy's Nuclear Security Enterprise. Y-12 provides manufacturing, technical, and scientific expertise to produce components, subassemblies, and quality evaluations to sustain a U.S. nuclear deterrent; reduce the threat from weapons of mass destruction; supply nuclear material to the Naval Reactors Program; and provide solutions to other emerging national security challenges. Y-12 has developed state-of-the-art capabilities in three core areas: nuclear technology and materials, security and consequence management, and manufacturing and technical services. Y-12 lends its specialized expertise to other federal agencies, such as the U.S. Departments of Defense and Homeland Security, state and local governments, and private-sector companies. Projects at Y-12 include providing protective equipment to soldiers in combat, training National Guard units for radiological emergencies, and creating machining platforms that improve production and efficiency.

About the Role:

The Project Engineer will support and coordinate various projects across one but not limited to; Commercial, Infrastructure, Production Modernization, and/or Production Stockpile projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide project engineering support necessary to complete planning, design and implementation of new machine tools and/or infrastructure upgrades.
  • Provide technical integration, leadership, guidance, and direction to other multi-disciplined engineering teams as requested for high profile plant initiatives and will appropriately apply ASME Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1) requirements for work in nuclear facilities; plan and direct the engineering activities on projects; establish detailed project design scope, budgets, and schedules; professionally coordinate engineering efforts with Production, Maintenance, Project Management, Construction, Startup, and Project Controls personnel; and review project engineering progress against approved schedules and take corrective action when required.
  • The nature of many of these large expense-funded Production capability initiatives are such that they fall outside the conventional capital projects organization, need near-term attention, and require the coordination and integration of technical resources both internal and external to the ME organization. The Project Engineering group does not have the resources internally, nor are resources available full-time from other avenues to complete this work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • BA/BS Degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited school in a technical discipline, plus 10 years or more of direct experience required, or an MA or MS with 10 plus years of experience.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Successful drug screening.
  • Requires a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status.

Location/Work Arrangement:

  • This position is a fully onsite position at the Y12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
