Essential Job Responsibilities:

The Senior Superintendent is responsible for ensuring all operations and personnel are functioning properly with respect to customer relations, productivity, safety, and quality assurance. While maintaining a positive working relationship with the labor, the Senior Superintendent is to set the standard for front line operations (management and union principles) and be held accountable for a safe and efficient operation at profit center assigned.


Essential Responsibilities:



  • Assist the Operations Manager with all day to day profit center functions.
  • Assists with communicating with Port Authority or land lease owners on a daily basis when needed.
  • Maintains a safe and efficient work environment, to include ensuring that all PPE is worn at all times and distributed for jobs that require additional PPE.
  • Ensures and maintains a drug and alcohol-free work environment.
  • Ensures and maintains a hostile free and discrimination free work environment.
  • Assists and manages the availability of equipment and personnel required for timely completion of scheduled vessel operations, and that staff and equipment are fully utilized, optimize resources utilization and uptime to meet the economic performance indicators, and assist as necessary with other required tasks in order to turn the vessel around within specific time.
  • Supervises all personnel, including company labor and contract labor, in proper operating procedures, and as needed will counsel, discipline and/or make termination recommendations to ensure an efficient operation.
  • Completes various reports and forms such as shift production, payroll, and safety summaries; Produces reports to respective parties within required deadlines.
  • Responsible for investigation and reporting damages and liabilities to the appropriate management and authorities.
  • Responsible for learning, navigating and adhering to all union contracts.
  • Assists Port Manager as a key coordinator between all parties, vessels, customers, agents and labor when needed.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience working in management.
  • 5 years managing related union labor.
  • Valid CPR certificate required.
  • Must have valid DL.
  • Ability to manage a large, complex and diverse workforce in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to respond quickly and effectively to operational issues.
  • Requires the ability to plan and organize projects in a fast-paced environment and be available to work varied hours, shifts and days.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively with union workforce and other staff.
  • Ability to explain, express, defines and gives examples of ideas and operations.
  • Extensive rigging expertise, including load/stress and calculation skills.
  • Thorough knowledge or principles of terminal operations.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Experience with computerized operating systems.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability strongly desired.
  • Knowledge of local unions dispatching rules.
  • Required to observe all safety and health requirements for container terminal environment.
  • TWIC card Required.


Work environment:




  • Must be able to work in rotating shifts, days, evenings and nights.
  • Must be able to work in extreme outdoor temperatures of hot and cold, extremely dusty conditions and occasionally, conditions of high levels of noise.
  • The ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving equipment
  • The ability to drive 10%
