Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts. This is an "at will" appointment that carries a 1.0 FTE service obligation on a 12-month basis with continuation or discontinuation at the discretion of the Chancellor. The expectation is that the successful candidate will serve for three (3) years with a possibility of renewal.
The director will assume the following duties:

  • Act as an advocate for the mission of the unit to the administration and outside constituencies
  • Act as a mentor and facilitator for the faculty and staff as they carry out their mission
  • Act as an administrator of the program in accomplishing necessary managerial tasks
  • Support the activities of the IDS Advisory Council
  • Support the research and teaching of affiliated IDS faculty
  • Teach 1 course per semester
  • Manage scheduling, curriculum, and program assessment
  • Manage the annual budget, trust fund, departmental scholarships, and fund-raising activities for the programs with the objective of meeting the instructional and research needs of the faculty and students
  • Conduct IDS program meetings
  • Represent the unit at the college chairs' meeting
  • Support the educational mission of the College and UNCW, and collaborating with other academic programs and units at UNCW and related regional institutions.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Applicants must have a terminal degree and qualify at the rank of professor or associate professor in their discipline
  • Must be a current UNCW faculty member within one of the colleges
  • Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinarity
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal relations, and administration skills

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Experience in interdisciplinary teaching, research and service
  • Experience in program assessment
  • Co-curricular event planning experience
  • Experience in grant activity
  • Experience in Academic Advising and/or mentoring
  • Record of effective collaboration with campus partners on program development, program recruitment, and/or curriculum design

Interdisciplinary Studies ( IDS) is a new college program that provides governance for the B.A. and M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies, college-wide minors and certificate programs, as well as the Gender Studies Resource Center.
