Entry-Level Construction Materials Engineer

Are you a motivated earlycareer professional who brings curiosity, accountability, and a strong desire to learn within a fastpaced project environment? S&ME is looking for an eager and dedicated full-time Entry-Level Construction Materials Engineer to join our Construction Services team in Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina.

What You Will Do:

As an Entry-Level Construction Materials Engineer, you will help uphold the quality and safety of construction projects by testing and validating the materials used. Guided by Licensed Engineers, your responsibilities will include conducting fieldwork, documenting subsurface conditions, assisting with calculations and design tasks, contributing to the development of proposals and reports, and providing general support to both projects and clients.



  • Material testing and inspection: Carry out tests and monitor special inspections on construction materials like concrete, asphalt, soil, and more to confirm compliance with specifications and relevant standards.
  • Reviewing design documents: Examine construction drawings and specifications to ensure they are consistent with project requirements before conducting site visits.
  • Field documentation: Track and record on-site activities and test outcomes in detail throughout the project lifecycle, using tools like Metafield or similar systems to streamline data entry and coordination.
  • Report and proposal development: Assist in creating technical reports and proposals for smaller-scale projects, ensuring all findings are clearly documented and well-supported.
  • Daily communication: Maintain regular contact with supervisors, contractors, and clients to share updates, clarify expectations, and support project alignment.



What We Are Looking For:

We are looking for someone with a collaborative mindset, high attention to detail, and a genuine interest in building their technical expertise to help you succeed as you grow alongside experienced engineers and contribute to delivering highquality project outcomes.

Qualifications:



  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering or a similar engineering field
  • Experience: 0-2 years of experience in construction materials testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt
  • Certifications/Professional Licensure-Registrations:

    • Engineer in Training (EIT) license or on track to obtain
    • Willingness to obtain at least one (1) industry certification within 6 months of employment


  • Key Competencies:

    • Basic math and communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language





Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

This role involves hands-on work in outdoor environments, and with Company-provided Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), you'll need to be comfortable with:



  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing (potentially up to 12 hours a day)
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Working outside of normal business hours and traveling (typically out-of-town and/or overnight) as project needs arise
