Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate will conduct a set of experiments in response to reviewer's comments on revision of a manuscript. Broadly, the manuscript investigates the role of a steroid hormone, ADIOL, in linking metabolic state to neural mechanisms of healthspan. The experiments involve C. elegans as a model organism. The experiment will involve a mix of molecular genetics, behavioral assays, and imaging assay, all in C. elegans.

Note: This is a limited position and will end 1 year after the start date.

The primary responsibility of the Staff Research Associate (SRA I) is to assist in the identification of appropriate cases for sequencing, following required documentation and protocols as needed, obtain samples and be responsible for quality control and extraction of DNA/RNA from these samples. Samples are often very small, so the individual needs to be familiar with procedures for working with small samples.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Physiology is one of five core Basic Science research Departments within UCSF's School of
Medicine, with primary roles in contributing to UCSF's research and teaching missions. Teaching is one of the core
missions of the Department. The Department of Physiology provides administrative and financial support for 17
core faculty as well as postdoctoral fellows, research academics, and graduate students. The Department of
Physiology is the home department to the Kavli Institute of Neuroscience and the Center for Integrative
Neurosciences; both located in Mission Bay.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in Biological or Health Sciences with emphasis on cellular and/or molecular biology, or a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Basic laboratory skills: Molarity calculations, accurate solution formulation, pH determination, maintenance of accurate notebooks, ability to understand and follow basic laboratory protocols with direct supervision, ability to perform complex tasks without committing errors.
  • Familiarity with C. elegans as an experimental model.
  • Team player with good communication and interpersonal skills. Willingness to learn and motivated to succeed.
