Job Description

Based in any of our offices across the US, ArentFox Schiff is seeking a Legal Writing Coach to join our Professional Development team. This role is designed for an experienced legal professional with a passion for teaching and mentoring. The Writing Coach will work closely with the team to support onboarding of new lawyers, provide individualized coaching, and deliver on-demand assistance for writing assignments. The focus will be on improving written communication across all levels-from emails to complex legal briefs-while helping attorneys acclimate to law firm life. The Writing Coach will also work with experienced attorneys to help them continue to sharpen their legal writing skills.

This is a part-time Exempt position with flexible hours based on demand and program schedule. Some travel will be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Onboarding Support:
    • Assist first-year associates and lateral hires in understanding firm expectations for written work.
    • Offer guidance on conducting legal research and analysis, initiating written assignments, and effectively managing draft revisions and internal/external deadlines.
  • Writing Coaching & Training:
    • Offer one-on-one coaching sessions to lawyers at all levels.
    • Deliver feedback on legal writing, editing, and communication style.
    • Conduct in-person and remote workshops or small group sessions on writing fundamentals and advanced techniques.
  • On-Demand Assistance:
    • Review and provide input on emails, memoranda, motions, briefs, and other written work as needed.
    • Serve as a resource for improving clarity, tone, and structure in legal documents.
  • Professional Development Collaboration:
    • Partner with the Professional Development team to design and implement writing programs.
    • Contribute to initiatives that enhance lawyer integration and success at the firm.

Qualifications

  • Education: Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 7 years of legal practice experience with strong writing and editing skills.
    • Prior experience teaching or coaching legal writing concepts (law school, CLE programs, or in-firm training).
    • Prior experience in an AM Law 200 firm.
  • Skills:
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to provide constructive feedback and adapt coaching style to individual needs.
    • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.

The anticipated good-faith base salary range for this position is:

  • BOS: $150,000 to $200,000 per year.

Your exact offer will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, your experience, skills, and overall qualifications. We also review compensation regularly against industry benchmarks and performance outcomes, so you can grow your career here with confidence-knowing your pay recognizes both your impact and our commitment to an equitable approach.

In addition to a competitive base salary, certain positions are eligible for a comprehensive performance-based bonus, payable monthly or annually.
