Job Summary:

The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for performing a variety of specialized technical tasks in Diagnostic Ultrasound utilizing high frequency sound waves to assist medical and professional personnel in detecting anatomical abnormalities.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs procedures according to departmental format, completing exams in allotted time.
  • Performs required daily clerical duties, which include the use of EPIC, Tele tracking System, computer system, patient scheduling, and other computer systems as added by Medical Center.
  • Performs portable ultrasound exams.
  • Performs a variety of complex technical tasks in Diagnostic Ultrasound utilizing high frequency sound waves to detect anatomical abnormalities including masses, abscesses, and stones in accordance with prescribed sonographic procedures. Assists physician with biopsy deep abdominal studies and color-flow ultrasound as required.
  • Determines, prepares, and sets up medical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Prepares patients for diagnostic procedures, explains procedures, measures, and positions patients for each anatomical view.
  • Evaluates technical quality of images. Obtains and processes images of pathogenic conditions in accordance with standard procedures or techniques.
  • Maintains records of ultrasounds taken, archiving and de-archiving data as required. Calculates, compiles, and records data from numerical readings on patient's charts and related documents.
  • Calibrates, cleans, and performs routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments, supplies, and equipment. Stocks and replenishes supplies as required.
  • Provides technical assistance and instruction to students, employees, and medical residents.
  • Lifts a minimum of 25 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs., and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.
  • Greets in/out patients when they arrive for their exam utilizing A.I.D.E.T. standards.
  • Responsible for scheduled shifts including holidays and weekends.
  • Overtime as needed to provide continual quality patient care.
  • On-call assignments as needed per Department of Radiology policy.
  • Adheres to the policies of Employee ID, Standards of Behavior, Attendance, and Punctuality.
  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.

Required Education:



  • Graduate of an approved Ultrasound School.
  • 2 years training in Allied Health/College.

  • R.D.M.S. registered.
  • Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS).

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Required Skills & Experience:



  • Must be able to perform CPR.
  • Knowledge of all ultrasound equipment, their function, and operation of each control.
  • Understanding of equipment and computer systems as well as the procedures for equipment service.
  • Knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of safety, infection, and disaster policy and procedures, including implementation of patient care in cases of an emergency situation.
  • Maintains CEU Credits.

  • 1 year of clinical experience in ultrasound.

  • Breast Center - Ultrasound Technologist with Breast Experience REQUIRED
  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficient in Breast Ultrasound Techniques: This includes performing routine and complex breast ultrasound examinations, utilizing various transducer types and frequencies, and applying appropriate scanning protocols for different breast tissues and patient presentations (e.g., dense breasts, implants, masses, etc.). They must be skilled in Doppler techniques to assess vascularity.
    • Image Acquisition and Optimization: Producing high-quality diagnostic images is crucial. This involves adjusting settings like gain, depth, focus, and time-gain compensation (TGC) to optimize image clarity and detail. They need to understand artifacts and how to minimize them.
    • Knowledge of Breast Anatomy and Pathology: A deep understanding of normal breast anatomy, variations, and potential pathologies is essential for accurate image interpretation and identification of suspicious findings.
    • Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Competence in operating and maintaining ultrasound equipment, including transducers, consoles, and printers, is necessary. This also includes troubleshooting minor technical issues.
    • Image Archiving and Retrieval (PACS): Familiarity with Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) for storing, retrieving, and transmitting images is essential for efficient workflow and collaboration with radiologists.
    • Breast Interventions: Assisting physicians with ultrasound-guided breast biopsies, aspirations, and other interventional procedures, including providing appropriate patient care and ensuring sterile technique.
    • Quality Control and Assurance: Participating in quality control and assurance programs to maintain image quality and equipment performance.
