What to Expect

Tesla's in-house cell product team is seeking an engineering manager to lead the Austin-based design group responsible for new launches & sustaining improvement of our transformative cylindrical cell platform. This position offers outsize leverage on the mission to deliver affordable, plentiful, and exhilarating products accelerating the sustainable transport revolution. Our vertically integrated program (from refining to recycling- electrode thru vehicle- both hardware and software) makes this unlike any other opportunity to engineer products for extreme speed, precision, and volume with vast internal data and super-aligned technical teams.


What You'll Do
  • Lead (and grow) group of 4+ factory-based design engineers focused on launch, ramp, and ongoing optimization of Tesla's vertically integrated cell products
  • Foster respect & seamless collaboration with partner teams (Manufacturing, Process, Quality, NPI, Qualification, Supply Chain) to tackle rate, yield, scrap, and reliability issues
  • Master-level knowledge of our cell design and the manufacturing systems that build it
  • Leverage an abundance of factory data to guide immediate design/cost, process, quality improvement efforts and longer-term product/equipment roadmaps
  • Drive creation of new tools, protocols, workflows, and documentation to increase mass-production sustaining engineering rigor
  • Oversee refinement of product specifications, DFMEA, change control processes
  • Field and coordinate team response to emergent issues (yield excursions, failures, etc)
  • Routinely connect with counterpart Bay Area managers to elevate design team practices and streamline handoffs between our development & production sites
  • Stimulate cost reduction/DFM/DFA projects and ensure the team executes
  • Support factory intelligence development initiatives and constant vigilance for incorporating modern AI tools to unlock new speed or capability paradigms

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or related specialization or equivalent experience
  • 8 years of technical experience, minimum 2 years demonstrated leadership of other engineers
  • Background in design and manufacturing of high-volume products, automated equipment
  • Expert in tolerancing, statistics, and data analysis methods (SPC / Black Belt proficiency)
  • Adept in FMEA and root-cause & corrective analysis
  • Competence in scripting (e.g. MATLAB, Python, JMP, R, Minitab)
  • Sharp engineering 1st principles, a quantitative mindset, and track record of successful mass production factory launches
  • Exceptional technical communication (live reporting, written form, and presentation of data)
  • Natural inclination to organize/motivate teams of people and improve workflows
