Job Summary

The Unit Director is responsible for the daily 24-hour planning, organizing, directing and controlling of the overall operations of the department & participates in decision making related to departmental functions.

Reporting to the Patient Care Director of the Acute Care Division, responsible for providing consistent clinical leadership and nursing practice oversight for UCSF Acute Care Division at Parnassus, Mission Bay and Mount Zion academic medical centers.

Serves as a role model for professional nursing practice. Manages staff involved in providing clinical patient care. Responsible for the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources on a 24-hour basis.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $253,900 - $269,400 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The 31-bed Orthopaedic/Neurospine/Orthospine Unit is a fast-paced inpatient unit, located on the fifteenth floor of Long Hospital. Staff provide exceptional patient-centered care to patients undergoing neurospine, orthospine and other orthopaedic surgeries. Types of surgery common on this unit include orthospine and neurospine procedures including laminectomy, discectomy, foraminotomy and spinal infusions, as well as some orthopaedic procedures such as soft tissue tumor removals. The unit focuses on cutting edge pain management modalities, evidence-based post-surgical interventions and advanced surgical interventions.

Clinical teams are highly trained in providing clinical patient care to these patient population. Clinical teams support their patients with an interdisciplinary approach. The dynamic patient care team consists of surgeons, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, case managers and social workers.

Professional development of the staff is supported through participation in classes, seminars, and conferences as well as unit councils, quality improvement projects and community activities.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required
  • minimum of 2 years of nursing management in an inpatient unit, academic medical center or highly matrixed organization. Other previous leadership experience may be considered
  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Knowledge of hospital / clinic operations in a hospital or medical center setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the department and team
  • Strong knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments
  • Strong knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills to foster and promote an environment for effective communication and collaborative decision making across multiple units and disciplines
  • Excellent leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines
  • Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's Degree in Nursing or relevant area
  • Prior experience in a union environment
  • Knowledge of Lean principles and key nursing indicators
  • Prior experience in acuity-adaptable model
  • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management used in nursing units or departments
  • National Certification in Nursing Leadership (examples: NE-BC, NEA-BC, CNML)

License/Certification


  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
