Job Summary

The Associate Ombuds provides impartial, informal, independent and confidential conflict resolution services to all UCSF constituencies, including faculty, staff, trainees and students in accordance with International Ombuds Association standards of practice. The position uses exceptional judgment and advanced concepts in conflict resolution to handle ombuds cases that may involve various levels of hierarchy and sensitive issues that have the potential for costly outcomes if not addressed. Services include individual Ombuds consultation and coaching, mediation, group facilitation and customized trainings. Ombuds services help individuals to mitigate conflicts that can otherwise lead to a grievance, disciplinary action and/or disruption in the workplace. Ombuds assist visitors assess options in the context of an academic healthcare, research, and teaching institution and develop strategies to engage in the conflict productively.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $110,400 - $235,400 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Office of the Ombuds provides impartial, informal, independent and confidential dispute resolution services to the campus and Medical Center community. Constituencies include faculty, non-faculty academics, staff, students, postdoctoral scholars, and trainees.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area
  • 5 Minimum Years of Directly related experience (in addition to degree)
  • Five (5) or more years of related work experience handling two-party and group mediations; documented experience in mediating informal workplace conflicts between individuals and within and between groups
  • Knowledge of the appropriate role of the Ombuds, International Ombudsman Association principles and standards of practice, and UC Ombuds Best Practices. Subject matter expertise in conflict competence and informal conflict engagement practices
  • Ability to develop rapport with a range of people for individual conflict engagement, coaching and consultation. Knowledge of personal and interpersonal variables (e.g. identity, power, experience) that impact the Ombuds/visitor relationship
  • Ability to organize and facilitate problem-solving mediation sessions and guide parties toward effective solutions. Ability to process complex issues in real-time and to persist in mediation process to bring cases to closure
  • Ability to manage complex group dynamics through conduct of conflict analyses and facilitation of group conflict management processes that include issues of diversity, hierarchy, and interpersonal dynamics. Experience managing group dynamics, problem solving, and engagement for informal conflict engagement
  • Documented experience with developing and delivering group training and presentations on a range of conflict-related topics
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication and conflict management skills.
  • Strong cultural competency skills: ability to work collaboratively and establish rapport with individuals from diverse backgrounds, identities, and perspectives
  • Ability to establish and maintain credibility with a variety of campus units; ability to establish trust with visitors and maintain impartiality and confidentiality
  • Five (5) or more years of related work experience handling two-party and group mediations; documented experience in mediating informal workplace conflicts between individuals and within and between groups
  • Strong identified team player skills to support departmental goals, objectives, and initiatives.
  • Ability to work a flexible hybrid schedule across the UCSF locations to meet the needs of employees and the business needs of the office. Regular onsite work is required, along with flexibility for appropriate delivery of remote service
  • Ability to handle a heavy workload
  • Knowledge and understanding of complex organizations, including organizational dynamics, management, development and change
  • Skills to work with various software for word processing, Zoom appointments, and databases

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced degree or equivalent in related area
  • Completion of basic workplace mediation training
  • Completion of International Ombuds Association Foundations training
  • Knowledge of UC policies and procedures related to faculty, staff, students, post-docs, and other trainees. Knowledge of the UCSF Code of Conduct, Principles of Community and similar institutional guidelines and practices
  • Work experience in an academic healthcare institution, healthcare institutional structures, norms, and pressures, including those that may guide problem-solving in the role of Ombuds and mediator
