This summer, we're excited to continue our 10-week Summer Internship Program-an opportunity for motivated college juniors and seniors to gain hands-on experience in the financial industry. Full Time (40 hours/week) attendance will be required, on site in Newport News, VA, from Monday June 1 - Friday August 7.

Internship Overview

The Legal and Compliance Intern will support the Legal, Compliance, and Insurance functions of the credit union under the supervision of the Director of Legal & Compliance and the Compliance Officer. During this internship, the intern will assist with legal research, document review, regulatory compliance support, and a structured document collection and audit project. The intern will gain hands-on exposure to in-house legal operations, regulatory compliance, and insurance documentation within a regulated financial institution, while contributing to meaningful compliance and risk management initiatives.

Responsibilities



  • Conduct legal and regulatory research related to credit unions, financial institutions, and applicable laws and regulations, and summarize findings for the Legal and Compliance team.
  • Assist with the review and organization of contracts, agreements, and legal or compliance documents under supervision, including preparing basic summaries, memos, and supporting documentation.
  • Support regulatory compliance efforts by assisting with regulatory tracking, policy and procedure reviews, and compliance-related projects.
  • Participate in risk management and audit support activities, including assisting with document collection, compliance checks, and identification of potential compliance or documentation gaps.
  • Assist with the drafting, updating, and organization of internal policies and procedures, and support communication of legal and compliance requirements across departments as directed.
  • Maintain and organize legal and compliance files, records, and documentation, including assisting with centralized document inventory and tracking initiatives.
  • Provide general support to the Legal and Compliance function, including assisting with internal requests, complaint review support, and litigation-related administrative tasks such as file organization and case tracking.



Qualifications



  • Required Qualifications:

    • Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program.
    • Strong interest in legal, compliance, risk management, or financial services.
    • Ability to conduct research, review documents, and summarize information accurately.
    • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
    • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
    • Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.


  • Preferred Requirements:

    • Current enrollment in or recent completion of a law degree program or advanced undergraduate or graduate coursework in law, public policy, business, finance, or a related field.
    • Interest in legal, regulatory compliance, risk management, or financial services.
    • Prior coursework or experience related to contracts, compliance, administrative law, or financial regulation is a plus.
    • Experience with research, document review, or policy analysis preferred.
    • Familiarity with regulated industries, financial institutions, or credit unions is a plus but not required.


  • Skills and Competencies:

    • Basic understanding of legal principles, governance concepts, and ethical standards.
    • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to review laws, regulations, and policies and summarize findings.
    • High attention to detail and accuracy when reviewing documents and records.
    • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
    • Professionalism, integrity, and discretion when handling confidential information.
    • Ability to think critically, identify issues, and support practical solutions.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with legal or compliance tools is a plus.


  • Additional Qualifications:

    • Interest in corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
