A Brief Overview

The Center for Data-Driven Discovery in Biomedicine (D3b) at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is dedicated to accelerating pediatric research through innovative data infrastructure and collaborative science. Our mission is to provide researchers with robust, scalable platforms that enable groundbreaking discoveries in childhood diseases and improve outcomes for children worldwide.

This position will focus on developing platforms and tooling that empower developers, researchers, and bioinformaticians to work more efficiently. The role centers on automating workflows, building use-case-driven solutions, and creating self-service infrastructure that removes barriers to scientific discovery. You'll design and implement platforms that enable teams to focus on their research rather than infrastructure management.

What you will do

  • Design and build self-service platforms and automation tools that enable researchers and engineers to deploy, test, and scale their work independently
  • Develop use-case driven solutions that address specific research workflows and accelerate time-to-science
  • Create and maintain CI/CD pipelines using modern DevOps practices, including GitHub, automated testing, and continuous deployment strategies
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure as code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar technologies to enable repeatable, programmable infrastructure
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code in Python and/or Go for platform services, automation tooling, and workflow orchestration
  • Build and manage cloud infrastructure on AWS (or other cloud platforms), designing systems that abstract complexity and provide intuitive interfaces for end users
  • Troubleshoot complex issues spanning networking, application code, infrastructure, and system integration challenges
  • Implement monitoring, logging, and observability solutions to ensure platform reliability and provide actionable insights to users
  • Collaborate with research scientists, data engineers, and bioinformaticians to understand pain points and translate them into platform capabilities
  • Serve as a mentor for all Data Engineers
  • Ensure security best practices and compliance requirements are integrated into all platform services and deployment processes
  • Perform incident response, root cause analysis, and implement preventive measures
  • Contribute to the establishment and documentation of platform standards and best practices across D3b
  • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to maintain code quality standards
  • Optimize platform resource utilization for cost-efficiency while maintaining performance
  • Work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment
  • Must possess critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills, along with the ability to communicate well with stakeholders throughout the organization

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related technical field Required
  • Master's Degree computer science, biomedical engineering, information science, or related field Preferred

Experience Qualifications

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Proven experience with DevOps methodologies, including GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code
  • Proficient programming skills in Python and/or Go with the ability to write clean, maintainable code
  • Hands-on experience with AWS or equivalent cloud platforms (Azure, GCP)
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues involving networking, distributed systems, and application code
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent projects and priorities with minimal supervision
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
