Position Summary
Join the Ramily! Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is seeking an experienced Electrician to join the Facilities Maintenance team.


The Electrician position is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical power, lighting, control, and communication systems in all campus buildings: academic, administrative, and residential. Employees must work 'on call' during the appointed dates and times when requested. This also includes callback work if needed.


Responsibilities of the Electrician include:

  • Performing inspections of electrical system equipment and facilities to assess condition, identify maintenance needs, and recommend repair priorities
  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing secondary electrical systems and related equipment
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting electrical components such as conduit, wiring, electrical panels, breakers, switchgear, magnetic starters, disconnects, and motors
  • Troubleshoot and repair control systems, including temperature controls, regulators, humidity controllers, sensors, pneumatic control valves, and regulators
  • Completing scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance on emergency generators and automatic transfer switch gears.
  • Conducting electronic diagnostics, testing, and repairs on generator systems and related equipment.
  • Repairing and maintaining lighting systems, including fixtures, ballasts, switches, and receptacles
  • Collaborating with fellow technicians and other departments to ensure seamless operation of all building systems
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and campus stakeholders
  • Maintaining records of repairs and maintenance performed
  • Managing work orders in Team Dynamix
  • Adhering to safety procedures at all times and employing protective equipment when necessary to ensure a safe and healthy living, learning, and working environment

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
Facilities is responsible for overall planning, design, construction and maintenance of university facilities. Facilities Operations is responsible for maintenance services. The maintenance department is responsible for providing preventive and corrective maintenance on all university systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical and carpentry.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation to support installation, maintenance, and repair activities.
  • Working knowledge is required of all applicable codes, safety precautions and methods of installation and repair.
