LICENSED OPERATOR (WWTP)
The City of Middletown is seeking qualified and motivated candidates for the position of Licensed Operator at the City’s Grade 4A Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment Plant. This position is open to candidates holding New York State Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification at Grades 1A, 2A, 3A, or 4A.
The Licensed Operator will be responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the wastewater treatment facility in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This role requires a strong working knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and the ability to perform a variety of operational, laboratory, and maintenance-related duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate, monitor, and control wastewater treatment plant equipment and systems associated with a Grade 4A Activated Sludge process
- Perform routine operational checks and adjustments to ensure optimal plant performance and regulatory compliance
- Conduct laboratory testing, sampling, and analysis of wastewater influent, effluent, and process control parameters
- Maintain accurate operational logs, laboratory records, and required documentation
- Assist with maintenance of equipment, tools, plant facilities, and surrounding grounds
- Identify and report equipment malfunctions, process issues, or safety concerns to supervisory staff
- Comply with all safety procedures, environmental regulations, and City policies
- Work assigned shifts, which may include weekends, nights, and afternoons, as required by plant operations
- Perform additional related duties as assigned in support of Department of Public Works operations
Qualifications
- Valid New York State WWTP Operator Certification at Grade 1A, 2A, 3A, or 4A
- Working knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, laboratory procedures, and sampling techniques
- Ability to perform mechanical and facility maintenance tasks
- Familiarity with operational and safety requirements in a regulated municipal environment
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Willingness and ability to work non-traditional shifts, including nights and weekends
Additional Requirements
- Residency in New York State and within 25 miles of the City of Middletown borders is required
- Employment is subject to Middletown Civil Service rules and examination procedures
