A Brief Overview

This role plays a vital role in the day-to-day veterinary operations. The Senior Research Veterinarian will work independently, as this team member is primarily responsible for veterinary procedures, training, stakeholder collaboration, compliance, and supervision.

What you will do

  • 1) Procedures
  • Understands, follows, and carries out all SOPs, quality assurance standards, safety procedures, and documentation requirements for related activities
  • Conduct surgical and diagnostic research procedures and interpret results of diagnostic testing for a variety of NHP species
  • Provide expert veterinary support for anesthesia, analgesia, surgery, and necropsy for a variety of species
  • Provide veterinary research support to a variety of animal species in accordance with current veterinary medical practices, federal regulations, Public Health Service Policy, and AAALAC standards
  • Understands, follows, and carries out all standard operating procedures (SOPs), quality assurance standards, safety procedures, and documentation requirements for related activities
  • Provide guidance to research personnel on animal model and protocol development, the selection of appropriate anesthetics and analgesics, surgical techniques and procedures, pre and post-operative care, rodent breeding colony management, and methods of euthanasia
  • Oversee quarantine procedures in collaboration with Department of Veterinary Resources (DVR), including review of health reports from incoming shipments
  • Schedule study procedures, personnel, and affiliate partners/sponsors in a timely manner
  • 2) Training
  • Develop training programs, manuals, materials, presentations
  • Provide hands on training for the staff and researchers
  • Supervise personnel to ensure work meets expectations
  • 3) Collaboration
  • Consult on protocol development and design
  • Supervise activities and provide recommendations
  • 4) Ensure regulatory compliance
  • Review, implement, improve & assist in audits of records, procedures & protocols
  • Develop tools to assist staff and investigators in compliance-related activities
  • 5) Program Development
  • Collaborate with researchers, DVR, and appropriate regulatory bodies to create a rodent Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)-compliant facility.
  • Develop SOPs and work with Quality Assurance for GLP compliance regarding: study design and planning, resources and infrastructure, study conduct and monitoring, data management and record keeping, and study completion and reporting
  • 6) Supervise supporting staff
  • Ensure staff is performing job duties and have resources needed
  • Provide performance feedback and review
  • Encourage staff development opportunities
  • Participate in new employee recruitment, interviews and hiring decisions; onboard and train new hires
  • Coordinate staff to ensure protocol support can be provided when requested
  • May be asked to be on-call / rotation and provide services after regular business hours, weekends, and holidays
  • Other responsibilities as required.

Education Qualifications

  • Doctorate Veterinary Medicine - Required

Experience Qualifications

  • At least five (5) years of veterinarian experience - Required
  • At least seven (7) years of veterinarian experience in a laboratory animal setting Preferred
  • At least five (5) years of anesthesia/surgery experience in a veterinary or lab animal setting Preferred
  • At least three (3) years of experience in a GLP-compliant setting Preferred
  • At least three (3) years of leadership, management or supervisory experience - Preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • Licensed Veterinarian - Authorized State Board of Veterinary Medicine - upon hire Required
  • Licensed Veterinarian - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - within 12 months Preferred
  • American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Board Certification American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine within 12 months Preferred

$126,560.00 - $167,690.00 Annually

Salary ranges are shown for full-time jobs. If you're working part-time, your pay will be adjusted accordingly.
