Job Description

VersaTech is seeking a strong Senior Accountant with government contracting exposure to support our growing Finance team. This role will focus on core accounting operations, month-end close, project accounting support, and government compliance execution.


This is a hands-on individual contributor role ideal for an experienced accountant who thrives in a structured, compliance-driven environment and enjoys partnering cross-functionally to ensure financial accuracy and operational efficiency.


This position reports to the Controller (or CFO) and does not initially include direct reports.


Salary: $90,000 to $110,000 depending on experience. Discretionary annual bonus based on performance.


Location: Savage, MD (Hybrid)


Key Responsibilities:

Financial Close & Reporting


  • Prepare monthly and quarterly journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Support timely month-end close.
  • Assist with preparation of internal financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Perform variance analysis (Actual vs. Budget/Forecast) with clear explanations.
  • Support annual external audit preparation and audit requests.
  • Assist with tax reporting and year-end financial package requirements.


Government Contract & Project Accounting


  • Ensure compliance with FAR, CAS, and DCAA requirements.
  • Support revenue recognition across contract types (T&M, CPFF, FFP).
  • Partner with Program and Contracts teams to ensure accurate project setup, cost tracking, and billing.
  • Monitor indirect rates, cost allocations, and project financial performance.
  • Maintain financial documentation for government and commercial contracts.


Government Contract Accounting Support


  • Assist in ensuring compliance with FAR, CAS, and DCAA requirements.
  • Support revenue recognition across contract types (T&M, CPFF, FFP).
  • Maintain job cost ledger accuracy and contract financial documentation.
  • Monitor project costs and assist with indirect rate tracking.
  • Support documentation preparation for incurred cost submissions if needed.


Project & Operational Accounting


  • Partner with Program and Contracts teams to ensure accurate project setup
  • Lead billing preparation and contract invoicing support.
  • Perform account reconciliations for receivables, payables, and prepaid accounts.
  • Support cash reporting and working capital tracking.
  • Provide backup support for A/P and A/R functions when needed.
  • Provide support to accounting staff as backup when needed.


Sales & Use Tax Compliance


  • Assist with multi-state sales and use tax tracking and reconciliations.
  • Review vendor invoices for proper tax treatment.
  • Support tax filings and documentation retention.


Systems & Process Improvement


  • Utilize ERP system (JAMIS preferred) for job cost and reporting accuracy.
  • Identify opportunities to improve close efficiency and reduce manual processes.
  • Maintain strong documentation and internal control practices.



Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 5-8 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in a government contracting environment.
  • Experience supporting month-end close and financial reporting.
  • Working knowledge of FAR and basic DCAA compliance requirements.
  • Experience with project-based or job cost accounting.
  • Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, data analysis).
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience with JAMIS or other government-focused ERP systems.
  • Exposure to indirect rate structures and cost pool allocations.
  • Experience supporting external audits.
  • Familiarity with percentage-of-completion or WIP reporting.
