Job Title: Lab Associate I Location: Benton IL Duration: 06 months will be extended Pay Rate: $20.00/hr. Shift Timing (Day/ Evening/ Night): Day 8 am- 4:30pm Job Description : Under direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, examines rock samples for several types of analysis, utilizing various equipment. Required to conduct tests and interpret test results for the coal mine inspector. Required to collect N.P.D.E.S. (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System), water samples for several types of analysis. Required to analyse air samples from mine atmospheres. Maintains and cleans the analytical laboratory; storage and support facilities. Conducts weight analysis of coal mine rock samples to test for percentages of carbon dioxide; ash and total moisture, utilizing various equipment (carbon dioxide train, brabender moisture tester, analytical balance, muffle furnace, chemicals) to conduct tests; determines results, for interpretation for the state mine inspectors. Conducts analysis of coal samples to determine BTU sulfur, ash and moisture content utilizing various equipment (parr calorimeter, Eco sulfur determinator, brabender moisture tester, analytical balance, muffle furnace, chemicals). Collect N.P.D.E.S. (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) water samples. Analyses water samples for total coliforms, identifies any hydrogen ion activity with an accumet 20 ph conductivity meter which requires complete calibration of instrument. Analyses air samples from mine atmospheres for methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and oxygen with gas chromatograph. Required to evacuate air sample bottles. Maintains and cleans the analytical laboratory offices, sample receiving room, sample preparation room, and storage and support facilities. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonable within the scope of the duties enumerated above. Required Qualification: Requires education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree with courses in laboratory, sciences. Requires elementary knowledge of laboratory procedures and techniques. Requires ability to use laboratory equipment safely in performing routine and standard laboratory tests.
