Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for this position, candidates will have the following:


  • ALA-accredited master's degree or equivalent advanced degree;
  • Meet criteria for assistant or associate professor as stated in the Faculty Handbook.


Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)
Successful candidates ideally have a bachelor's or advanced degree or coursework in a business-related field, along with demonstrated experience or interest in the following:

  • Supporting students and faculty with developing information literacy and research skills;
  • Evidence of understanding of the Association of College and Research Libraries' Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and other relevant frameworks;
  • Knowledge of library subject specialist/liaison best practices and services;
  • Collection development for business;
  • Outreach and developing collaborative relationships;
  • Utilizing Canvas, or other Learning Management Systems (LMS), and SpringShare products;
  • Knowledge of artificial intelligence tools and related technologies.

Description of the Department or Unit
The Appalachian State University Libraries are essential teaching and research partners, inspiring and guiding all who pursue knowledge. With over 80 talented and hard-working faculty and staff, the Libraries curate rich print and e-collections, teach information literacy skills, and steward thoughtful spaces for Appalachian State students, faculty, and staff. The University Libraries supports the University with its recent R2 designation through research support, collections, and scholarly communications. Through our digital spaces, scholarship, and service, our library colleagues impact the larger world of knowledge.
The Carol Grotnes Belk Library and Information Commons, the Nicholas Erneston Music Library, and the Hickory Campus Library and Information Commons are our three libraries. We work closely with other UNC System libraries, NC LIVE, the Carolina Consortium, and the Western NC Library Network ( WNCLN).
The Research & Instruction Division integrates information literacy and library instruction across the University curriculum, collaborates closely with undergraduate and graduate programs, strengthens student learning and academic success, and supports faculty with their teaching and research.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Business Librarian is a member of the Research & Instruction Division and serves as the primary liaison to the Walker College of Business ( WCOB), which enrolls 5,000 students at the Boone campus, Hickory campus, and App State Online. With attention to the University's new R2 status, the person in this role supports the research and instructional needs of students and faculty by providing course-integrated instruction, individual and group research consultations, and broad outreach for the programs and centers supporting the departments of: Accounting; Computer Information Systems; Economics; Finance, Banking and Insurance; Management; and Marketing & Supply Chain Management. The position will collaborate closely with social sciences librarians and serve as a member of the University Libraries' Collections Council to lead collection development for business disciplines and ensure strategic alignment of business resources with evolving curricular and research priorities.
Specific responsibilities include:
Instruction and Information Literacy

  • Support the curricular needs of the programs in the College of Business by designing and delivering instruction and providing research consultations.
  • Develop tutorials and integrate library resources into App State's learning management system.
  • Deliver multi-modal instruction sessions and research consultations: synchronous or asynchronous, online or in-person.
  • Contribute to the Libraries' chat service and research consultation program.
  • Collaborate with other librarians on instruction as appropriate.


Outreach

  • Develop and implement outreach initiatives to engage College of Business faculty, staff, and students.
  • Represent the University Libraries at university-wide and College of Business-related events.
  • Communicate information and provide updates on library collections, services, and initiatives to business faculty, students, and staff.
  • Organize and collaborate with other liaisons on outreach activities and initiatives.

Research Support

  • Provide research support to the College of Business community and related stakeholders.
  • Consult on citation management tools and software.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Research & Innovation on research services, projects, and activities.

Collection Development

  • Evaluate and recommend books, journals, and specialized databases that support the College of Business.
  • Analyze usage data to ensure collection resources are utilized effectively.
  • Stay current with trends in business literature.
  • Support new course approvals and departmental accreditations.

As a faculty member of the University Libraries, the person in this role will maintain an active program of scholarship and professional service in line with Departmental Foundational Documents, the Appalachian State University Faculty Handbook, and Academic Affairs Standard Operating Procedures.
Occasional travel to the Hickory campus for classes, events, and meetings is expected with reasonable accommodations.

Suggested Salary Range $54,000 - 63,000 for assistant professor and $68,000 - 72,000 for associate professor. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
ABD Consideration: N/A - ABD is not applicable for this position. See Minimum Qualifications.
ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
