JOB SUMMARY

The Production Manager will provide oversight and direction to all Operations and Supervisors in the manufacture of Power Transformers. This position responsibilities will include providing leadership to positively influence a safety culture, setting the workmanship and quality expectations for all production areas, achieving daily and shift production targets, defining and executive leader standard work, supporting and executing production pull system and visual plant metrics, and management of direct and indirect cost centers and budgets.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develops, assigns, and follows up on work assignments to direct labor force through the supervisory group. Frequently checks on the work in process to assure that the published schedules and boards will be met while workmanship, housekeeping, safety, quality, and other performance standards are maintained.
  • Evaluates methods, schedules, staffing deployment, job alignment, processed, tooling, capital, and product attributes and standardization to drive improvements in plant productivity and efficiency performance.
  • Evaluates and recommends plans and ideas of supervisory group to meet manufacturing objectives and operating plans. Participates in continuous improvement meetings with Operations Supervisors, Manufacturing Engineers, Process Engineers, Quality Engineers, Planners and associate team members.
  • Utilizes Lean/CI tools to sustain and enhance leader standard work, pull production system, tier meeting structure, visual factory boards and reinforces the maintenance of the 5S, Contamination Control, Tool Control, and KanBan or VMI programs.
  • Coordinates with Engineering, and Operations Supervision to effectively produce "special" or first time designs through the shop by means of advance planning and design review meetings.
  • Coordinates with supervisors to help drive higher levels of employee engagement and works to facilitate effective employee communications including daily meetings, monthly and special communications meetings, and performance evaluation discussions.
  • Assists Supervisors and others in resolving production problems, as well as problems involving materials, machinery, processes, and personnel discipline.
  • Establishes standards of workmanship to meet product quality requirements and follows up with frequent checks of work in process and finished units. Works with Quality Assurance and Engineering to resolve cause and resolution of non-conformance products and failed units or components.
  • Develops management skills in the Supervisory group through day to day coaching and counseling as well as assures that formal training needs are addressed with assistance of Training Department. Also develops skill training assessment in each shop department and implements action plans to resolve any gaps/deficiency.
  • Assures consistent enforcement of company policies as they pertain to production employees. Maintains employee morale by developing an understanding of the shop employee complaints and sentiment so that continued good relations will prevail.
  • Works with staff functions to reduce product cost and increase shop productivity while maintaining established quality levels.
  • Reviews all manufacturing budget plans versus actual experience and takes action to control accounts.
  • Evaluates the production schedule in terms of capacity/demand and provides for proper staffing in both the direct labor force as well as the supervisory group. Plans for supervisory coverage during vacation or periods of illness.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Position requires a comprehensive knowledge of the Company products, general management policies and objectives, and specific understanding of all production related operations performed within the factory.
  • Coordination of the plant activities requires working with intangibles, such as changing priorities and volume of production, as well as working with all levels of staff groups.
  • Decisions require sound judgement and the ability to deal with ambiguity on long range problems. It is expected that the Production Superintendent act as a role model and as an agent of the Company.
  • An excellent team player with strong people skills; able to build relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Performance management, coaching, feedback, encouraging and empathic communication skills
  • Basic team-building and fundamental leadership skills
  • Effective communication skills, including verbal (logical and organized), written, listening and presentation
  • The Production Manager is responsible for all aspects of their respective departments and therefore must be able to be mobile around the manufacturing areas

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required Education / Experience:

  • BS/BA Degree with five to seven years of experience in a manufacturing environment including supervisory experience. Greater years of manufacturing management experience may be considered in lieu of BA degree.

Preferred Education / Experience:

  • Additional education and/or business certifications
