Assistant Vice President, Laboratory Services

The Assistant Vice President of Laboratory Services provides operational and strategic leadership for Inova Health System Laboratory Services including all Hospitals, Emergency Care Centers and the Inova Center for Personalized Health. Responsible for JCAHO, CLIA, and CAP management standards for all inpatient and outpatient areas under the Inova Laboratories licenses and ensures compliance with Federal, State, and local laws and regulations pertaining to the laboratory and the maintenance of required records. Responsible for positive outcomes in area of quality, service, growth, cost, people, and community. Partners with management for fiscal responsibility of the oversight and implementation of all aspects of managing the program, to include annual budgets, capital acquisition, utilization, planning, reimbursement and cost per test design for cost reduction and effectiveness.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversees assigned department or functional area to ensure it us performing effectively, which may include but not limited to, preparing and implementing business strategy to achieve the organization's goals, ensuring legal compliance, communicating and collaborating with stakeholders, and overseeing the company's financial performance. Oversees employment decisions at the upper management level of the company.
  • Plans and implements action to achieve performance measures in key results areas; Collaborates, plans, directs and coordinates activities with stakeholders involved in the preparation and support for Inova Center for Personalized Health, Inova Schar Cancer Institute, Wellness, and Employee Health initiatives and projects.
  • Supports directors, managers and supervisors in recruitment, staff development and staffing initiatives; Demonstrates effective communication skills through working relationships with physicians, referral sources, patients and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates regulatory and accreditation compliance for CMS, JCAHO or other entities; Ensures compliance with all regulatory or accreditation requirements.
  • Partners with the management team to actively participate in negotiation of physician contracts and monitor compliance with terms and performance measurements; Partners with the management team to work with Marketing, Business and Strategic Planning to develop, implement and meet the objectives of the growth plan; Collaborates with marketing, communication and referral development staff to develop and implement the laboratory marketing plan; Partners and acts as resource to the Medical Chairmen/Pathologists, Laboratory Directors of all the operating units. Directly supervises and coaches Lab Directors across the system, including the Sr Director, Lab Services, three Directors located at Inova Laboratories (Clinical, Business Operations and Technology and Director, Administrator Reference Labs) and the Lab Directors for Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Inova Alexandria Hospital, Inova Loudoun Hospital and Inova Mount Vernon Hospital.
  • Leads and/or participates in Lab Directors Monthly Meeting, Clinical Practice Teams, system meetings as needed (IT, Business Development Strategic Operations Reporting meeting) and public agencies for outbreaks or meet with leaders across the system, management, medical staff and clinical areas to discuss laboratory services, plan and implement changes of strategic operational goals and new business development for the operating unit. Promotes standardization for improvement (bar-coding, automation, standardization of analyzers and specimen tracking).
  • Participates with Supply Chain in facilitating effective system wide vendor negotiation and standardization as well as the selection of Reference Lab (RFP). Actively involved in Business Continuity planning for system particularly for the Laboratory Services.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in all aspects of managing the program, to include annual budgets, capital acquisition, utilization, planning and reimbursement; Meets budget for volumes, costs and FTE utilization for assigned cost centers; Monitors expenses and capital acquisition to meet clinical need; Partners with the management team to participate in contract negotiations with vendors for all supplies, services, and equipment procurement for the laboratory.
  • Provides oversight and direction for Laboratory Services; Evaluates and implements opportunities for improved efficiency and effectiveness based on data and market benchmarks; Provides leadership with program staff, managers and directors to achieve patient safety and performance improvement goals; Coordinates program evaluation efforts integrating data available from multiple sources and leads change efforts; Achieves patient satisfaction scores at or above benchmarks.
  • Supervises, directs, coaches and supports laboratory leaders to meet performance goals and achieve professional growth objectives; Conducts annual reviews and performance evaluations meeting all deadlines; Recruits, hires, and retains qualified and effective leaders to management and supervisory roles; Monitors performance and implements improvement plans to insure compliance with all personnel requirements for staff.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Experience - 10 years of experience as a Laboratory Technologist and 8 years of experience in management
  • Education - Bachelors Degree Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare or Public Business Administration or Related Program

Preferred Requirements:

  • Progressive leadership experience overseeing multi-site or health system laboratory operations, including hospital-based, outpatient, and reference laboratory services.
  • Prior experience managing a workforce of 500+ team members through a multi-tiered management structure
  • Familiarity with digital pathology, laboratory automation and standardization initiatives, with the ability to implement innovative solutions to improve operational efficiency and diagnostic quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with Pathology leadership, Information Technology, clinical executives, and operational stakeholders to advance system-wide strategic and innovation priorities
