Primary Purpose of Department
The TRIO office works with students who are first-generation, low-income, or who have a disability in their transition to and progression through their undergraduate experience by providing supportive academic strategy development, financial literacy education, and transferable skills practice. Our programs and services are continuously improved through routine examination of student learning outcomes, program and service evaluations, and strategic goals.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Program Director for TRIO provides leadership, vision, and compliance for the TRIO Student Support Services program at UNC Charlotte.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Program Director provides strategic leadership and administrative oversight for the federally funded TRIO- SSS program, ensuring strict fiscal and regulatory compliance with EDGAR and GEPA standards. This role is responsible for the dual mission of managing a complex federal grant-including budget reconciliation via Banner Finance and the authorship of the Annual Performance Report-while driving institutional student success through campus-wide collaborations and the TRIO Council. The Director oversees the entire participant lifecycle, from high-level data governance and recruitment via Slate to providing secondary academic advising and intervention through EAB Navigate. Additionally, the position holds full supervisory authority over the Project Coordinator and student staff, establishing the annual goals and operational framework necessary to meet the university's retention and graduation mandates for first-generation and low-income students.
Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master's or terminal degree
  • 5+ years working with TRIO or other college access programs for low-income and first-generation students
  • 3+ years managing personnel, budgets, and programs
  • Proficiency in data analysis and program evaluation skills

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Project management experience.
  • Supervision of federal grant programs.
  • Knowledge of case management services and advising students on college course selection, financial aid application processes, and graduate school or career exploration.
  • Personal experience overcoming barriers such as low-income, first-generation students, or others similar to those of the target population.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for engaging with various audiences such as current or incoming students, parents, and campus stakeholders.
