Position Summary

The Director of Actuarial Valuation leads the Valuation Center of Excellence (VCOE), partnering with business, actuarial, and finance functions to ensure the integrity of our financial statements and to support our business strategy.

Responsibilities - including but not limited to:

  • Lead the actuarial Valuation COE (VCOE)Develop and execute strategies to drive value and enhance valuation for Securian

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and the Board: Communicate complex valuation results, emerging issues, and strategic priorities with clarity.

  • Direct end-to-end valuation processes: Ensure timely, accurate completion of actuarial balances for GAAP and statutory reporting, while driving continuous improvement.

  • Provide analysis and forward-looking guidance to inform future results and potential actions

  • Champion governance and compliance: Oversee valuation controls, Audit Committee support, FRCC compliance, and engagement with external auditors.

  • Manage the budget for VCOE resources

Talent Leadership and Development
  • Build and inspire a high-performance culture: Lead leaders and their teams, attract high-performing talent, and foster an inclusive environment where innovation and excellence thrive.

  • Develop future-ready leaders: Coach and mentor team members, aligning strengths to strategic priorities and accelerating career growth.

  • Advocate for continuous development: Identify opportunities to expand capabilities and position the team for long-term success.

Advance actuarial governance and standards of practice
  • Serve on and identify associates to serve on enterprise governance committees, providing the appropriate level of oversight in accordance with internal policies and external standards of practices

  • Provide oversight of valuation practices, ensuring alignment with enterprise policies and practices

  • Oversee the assumption setting process for valuation

Support Securian's business strategy
  • Drive alignment with Securian's business strategy: Serve as a key strategic partner to senior leadership, ensuring actuarial insights and valuation expertise directly inform enterprise priorities and long-term growth objectives.

  • Deliver actionable financial intelligence: Analyze and communicate the financial implications of management decisions, offering forward-looking perspectives that influence strategic decision making.

  • Lead regulatory changes and compliance excellence: Spearhead the implementation of VM-22 across the organization, ensuring readiness, adherence to evolving regulatory standards, and connection to business insights.

  • Champion continuous improvement and modernization: Identify opportunities to leverage advanced analytics and embed automation to strengthen decision-making and operational efficiency.

  • Engage with external audiences to gain appropriate perspective, influence their view of / experience with Securian, and fulfill enterprise external obligations

  • Actively participate in industry and analytics focused conferences to stay aware of evolving regulations, new practices, and emerging technologies

  • Foster and grow external relationships with key stakeholders, including KPMG and other partners

Required Qualifications:

  • FSA with at least five years of experience

  • Understanding of GAAP and/or statutory valuation regulations

  • Ability and desire to develop a team

  • Strong leadership skills, including communication and problem-solving

  • Demonstrated strategic thinking skills

The estimated base pay range for this job is:

$153,700.00 - $283,000.00

Pay may vary depending on job-related factors and individual experience, skills, knowledge, etc. More information on base pay and incentive pay (if applicable) can be discussed with a member of the Securian Financial Talent Acquisition team.
